M onths ago we received an outstanding consignment that bridged the gap between hobby and art: a beautiful painting by artist and noted collector Richard Merkin (1938-2009), featuring hobby icon Jefferson Burdick, the T206 Honus Wagner, and a host of 1933 Goudey cards. It got us thinking: what if we reached out to our customers in a search for other quality art pieces, and created a small art auction within our Premier Auction? Typically we turn down most sports art. We are a cards and memorabilia auction. At the same time, we have sold more art by Graig Kreindler – the definitive contemporary sports artist – than any other auction house. We have sold pieces by Arthur K. Miller, Dick Perez, and others. And we also frequently offer pieces of sports lithography – woodcuts, vintage prints and
the like. We also understand that the material we sell is often as much at home in a memorabilia collection as it is in an art collection. For this auction we were able to come up with a small selection of quality art – from a rare photogravure of the classic 1894 “Temple Cup Print” to contemporary pieces by some of today’s most in-demand sports artists, we’ve curated a small grouping of eight quality works. This grouping represents a cross- section of stylistic approaches to memorializing the game, ranging from the photorealistic work of Graig Kreindler to the pop art of Steve Sax to the cartoon illustration of Willard Mullin. We hope you enjoy this selection of baseball art as much as we have enjoyed curating it.
