48. 1895 N566 Newsboy Cabinets John Ward (HOF) - SGC GOOD 2

Issued in the late 1890s by the National Tobacco Works the N566 Newsboy cabinet set was a massive set that contained hundreds of popular athletes, actresses, locations, politicians and more. The 4 1/2 x 6 1/2” sepia photographs were mounted on a variety of cardboard backings, many cream in color (such as this) but also gray with a green border and text. Newsboy cabinets are very highly desirable particularly due to the extraordinary scarcity and value of the 14 baseball players that have been discovered. More than 600 cabinets are known thus far with multiple variations possible. Of the fourteen known baseball players featured in the Newsboy issue, just three depict Hall of Famers: one of Amos Rusie (featured elsewhere in this auction) and two different featuring John Montgomery Ward. This example the “Bat at Side” photo boasts impeccable image clarity and contrast with very little wear to the photo itself. Some staining and soiling at the reverse reduce the technical grade, as does some very light wrinkling and tiny tears to the image at the bottom right edge. Newsboy cabinets featuring baseball players are very difficult to locate and with just two different Hall of Famers available are very desirable when they become available.

MINIMUM BID: $1,000

49. 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions King Kelly (HOF) - PSA VG 3 (MK)

50. 1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinets Sam Thompson (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2

In response to Allen & Ginter’s “World Champions” issues, Goodwin & Co. produced a 50- card set of sports-related subjects which included eight baseball players. The set’s stunning lithography ranks it among the most beautiful baseball trading card issues ever produced, and it is the opinion of more than a few collectors that this particular card - the N162 King Kelly - is the hobby’s single most beautiful baseball card. The famous Boston catcher set against a stormy backdrop creates a color palette

In 1894, Sam Thompson joined Ed Delahanty and Billy Hamilton to become the only HOF outfield to have all three fielders hit above .400 in a single season. An offensive powerhouse, the good- natured Thompson was known for his home runs, one of the greatest power hitters of the 19th Century. The first left-handed hitter to club 20 home runs in a season, Thompson averaged nearly one RBI per game for the entirety of his 15-year career.

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA, this is the only example of this cabinet photo graded by PSA. Though all N173 cabinets are rare, examples featuring Clarkson are incredibly so. Light soiling is evident throughout, with some added staining on the reverse. The image itself exhibits very little of the fading common with Old Judge cards, overall quite appealing despite the wear. Corresponding with pose #456-5 in the N172 Old Judge issue, this image sets Thompson against the familiar stadium backdrop, the right fielder posed as if about to swing at an incoming pitch. A rare pose from one of the most desirable of all 19th Century issues.

better suited to be mounted above a fireplace than in someone’s card collection, as this card is truly a work of art. Graded VG 3 (MK) by PSA, the card exhibits some edge and corner wear and very light soiling that detract from the technical grade, but the eye appeal is extraordinary. The MK qualifier is the result of lightly erased pencil markings on the reverse. In recent years this card has exploded in value as its rarity and beauty make an attractive combination for advanced collectors. Simply a beautiful card.
