as part of ecological conservation trust or easements on properties in the spirit of conservation. “What better permanent gift to friends and neighbours could there be?” stated An- gela Coleman, SNC communications direc- tor, in a press release. “It’s the gift that keeps on giving beyond the lifetime of the donor, and in many situations, there are attractive environmental and economic benefits for such donations.” The SNC manages and monitors the 4000-square-kilometre South Nation River watershed, safeguarding the river and sur-

rounding wetlands habitat, doing studies on local flora and fauna, monitoring wa- ter quality, and providing flood protection through a series of low-level dams and weirs and with floodgates. The conservation agency also maintains, on its own or in partnership with communi- ties and special interest groups within the watershed, several community forests, na- ture preserves, public recreation sites, and backcountry trails for hiking, horseback rid- ing, snowmobiling, and cross-country ski- ing. Lands donated to the SNC become part

of the agency’s ecological preserve to help maintain forest cover for the watershed. This also helps maintain the South Nation River and its tributary streams as healthy habitats for fish, waterfowl, and wildlife. “We depend on a healthy, natural environ- ment to provide a wide range of ecosystem services,” stated Coleman, “such as improv- ing water quality, recharging groundwa- ter aquifers that supply water to wells and creeks, reducing the risk of flooding and erosion, and maintaining biodiversity.” The SNC has received about 1500 acres of land through the EGP in past years. In most cases a donor may be eligible for a tax ben- efit from the gift. Where an easement is in- volved, the donor continues to hold title to the land. SNC staff work with potential do- nors to the land preserve to make sure the gift is suitable for the SNC and the donor. Lands eligible for donation may include wooded areas, wetlands, and some types of agricultural property. There are also provi- sions through the EGP for cash donations that will help the SNC with its conservation protection and expansion projects. “Every little bit counts,” stated Coleman. “That’s especially true in an era of govern- ment funding cuts.” More information on the EGP is available from SNC lands and fisheries director Pat Piitz, toll-free to 1-877-984-2948, extension 244, or email to Ppiitz@nation.on.ca.
