Stelmar Homes: Local Apartment Building by Peri Hayes In the late 1990s, Adrian Martin acquired Stelmar Homes from his parents. Continuing to evolve the business, Adrian proudly conveys, “Since the early 1980s, Stelmar Homes has consistently created a space and a place where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live, work, learn and thrive. Of course, over the years, the concept has organically grown.” “Everyone who comes to live within the Stelmar Homes community receives a personalized quality of care and are provided clean living spaces, supportive environments, access to food, laundry and true opportunity for independent living. We are committed to treating each person with respect and kindness.” While striving to meet the needs of each person utilizing their services, Stelmar Homes values the following: dignity and respect; strong communication; the right to fully participate; seizing collaborative opportunities; responding to change in support of the people; and honouring their integrity. Passionate about crediting their partnerships, Adrian highlights, “Aaron and Justin Boyce from Accuratus Design Build, Inc., and the Commercial, Industrial, Institutional and General Contractors are the ones who constructed this building. They did a fantastic job of designing, creating and putting the final project together.” Adrian beams about this new apartment building in St. Thomas being a means of giving back to this supportive community. As Adrian proceeds to offer, “The relationship between Stelmar and Accuratus started in 2019 and from there, each firm saw
the power of working together. This is the first opportunity that opened up, and we connected.” Unifying construction and services for those in need is their priority. As this is a communal living building, there are four pods -- each equipped with four bedrooms. The building in total contains 16 bedrooms, four living rooms, four kitchens and four bathrooms. Moreover, shared laundry is located in the basement. The $1,000 monthly rent includes cable, wifi, one hot meal a day and unlimited snacks. Adrian assures, “We have an amazing Building Manager who keeps an eye on everything — and the building — very clean.” “The exciting part of this build is the ability to be a part of something much bigger,” Adrian voices. “It may sound a little corny, but there is a growing problem out there and we would like — if maybe only small — to be part of the solu- tion. Having any person unhoused is not accept- able in 2025. People need a warm bed; they need a support system; they need food.” Those with inquiries about this local apartment building are welcome to send an email to adrian@stelmarhomes.com or phone 519-660-9213.
