‘Tis the Season to Indulge by Steve Bond, BScPhm, RPh, CDE Yurek Pharmacy & Home Healthcare The holiday season brings joy, laughter, and connection, but it can also test your self-control. Between office parties, family dinners, and endless treats, it’s easy to slip into habits that leave you feeling sluggish and guilty. Staying mind- ful of what your body needs helps you enjoy every celebration without regret. Holiday thoughts are in the air – plans for gift-giving, friends and family get-togethers and food preparations. A joyous time of the year, but also a time of over-indulging. Celebrations often involve too many rich foods, too much alcohol and lack of sleep. The aftermath can have us asking, ‘Why did I do that to myself?’. Planning helps us avoid overdoing it and instead, to truly enjoy and revel in the season. Here are some suggestions to get you through this festive time without throwing away your healthy habits: • Eat before the event. Have something small and nutritious like yogurt, fruit, or a handful of nuts before heading out. You’ll arrive satisfied and less tempted to overeat. • Use a smaller plate. It helps control portion sizes and encourages mindful choices. Fill half your plate with vegetables or salads before adding rich dishes. • Stay hydrated. Drink water before, during, and after the event. If you’re enjoying alcohol, alternate each drink with water or sparkling water to keep your body balanced.
• Enjoy your favourites. Don’t deny yourself the foods you love most. Pick a few treats, take smaller portions, and truly savour every bite. • Eat mindfully. Slow down, notice the flavours, and take breaks between bites. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to signal fullness, so give it time. Take care of your energy and well-being: The holidays can be busy and stressful. Make time for rest, movement and mental breaks. Go for a walk, listen to music, or enjoy quiet time without screens. A refreshed mind makes it easier to make healthy choices. If you overdo it, drink plenty of water, eat lighter, nourishing foods, and get some outdoor exercise. Before using any over-the- counter remedies, talk to your pharmacist for safe advice. If indulgence is becoming frequent and affecting your health, don’t hesitate to seek help. Small changes now can prevent bigger problems later. Embrace balance this season. The holidays are meant to be enjoyed, not endured. With pre- paration and a mindful approach, you can celebrate fully — keeping your body happy, your mind calm, and your joy intact. Bring on the holidays! Take care of yourselves and each other.
