Winter Hobbies: Finding Joy in the Slower Season by Amelia Bainbridge, Communications & Donor Relations Coordinator, St. Thomas Public Library As the days grow shorter and colder, it’s easy to feel a little cooped up. But winter can also be the perfect time to slow down, try something new, and let your creativity take the lead. Picking up a new hobby, whether it’s crafting, drawing, or learning a new skill, can boost your mood, reduce stress, and even help you feel more connected to others. You don’t need to be an expert or have fancy supplies to start. Simple, hands-on activities like making cards, knitting, or learning to paint can turn long, dark evenings into cozy moments of calm. And if you’re thinking about giving handmade gifts this year, a creative project can be a fun, personal way to show someone you care. Your library is here to spark your imagination. Visit our Maker Lab, where you’ll find everything you need to bring your ideas to life. Design and cut ornaments or tags with the laser cutter, make custom mugs or t-shirts with the heat press, or create vinyl stickers and decals with the vinyl printer. It’s a welcoming space for beginners and experienced makers alike to experiment, learn, and create. If you love a sense of community, join our Craft in Company program. It’s an informal, friendly, get-together where crafters of all kinds bring their in-progress works and share ideas, encouragement, and conversation.
Need a little inspiration? The library is full of resources to help you get started. Browse our shelves for books on crafting and DIY, from woodworking and embroidery to upcycling and journaling. Or explore Creativebug, our online platform, with hundreds of step-by-step video courses in art, design, and crafting. It’s free with your library card! This winter, why not turn those indoor hours after work or school into creative time? You might find that it gives you the lift you need to get through the season. Remember, the real value lies in trying something new, not in doing it perfectly. You could discover a lifelong passion or simply enjoy keeping your mind active, even while working on a project that doesn’t quite go as planned. Either way, it’s time well spent, with a little help from your library!
