apostles were drunk (Acts 2:13). Thus it was in Antioch when the message was refused (Acts 13:41). Thus Lot’s sons-in- law thought he mocked when he warned them of the approaching judgment (Gen. 19:14). And thus, alas, do men today treat the message from God. Second, some procrastinated and said, “We will hear thee again of this matter,” They were like Felix who, when the truth was presented to him, put off making a decision, saying, “When I have a convenient season,” ’ as though he could command God to wait upon man’s pleasure. The truth is that there is an accepted time when God is pleased to send forth the message to men and issue an invitation to all men to receive eternal life by faith in Christ. That accepted time is here and now. It is today; tomorrow may find God’s invita tion withdrawn and the soul eternally lost (2 Cor. 6:2 ). Third, there were some who clave unto Paul and believed his message. They re pented when the Word was preached, they realized that God was the eternal Creator, Maker of all things, Sustainer of all things, and the One who could not be wor shiped with the work of men’s hands. They turned to this God from their idols, their bondage to Satan was broken, and they became Christians by simple faith in Christ, in whom alone the true God may be found. Lesson Questions Vs. 22, 23. How did Paul happen to be at Mars Hill? O f what did he accuse the Athenians ? Why ? What did he say about their inscription, “To the Unknown God” ? Vs. 24-29. What would be the attitude of the philosophers and stoics toward Paul’s preaching regarding the Creator? How did he set aside salvation by works? How did Paul show that all men have the same source o f existence, the same sinful na ture, and the same need o f a Saviour? What did he teach regarding the “universal Fatherhood of God and brotherhood of man,” apart from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? Vs. 30-34. What urge to repentance did Paul give? To what teaching did his hear ers especially object? Why? Did the ma jority believe on Christ? Who did? , Golden Text Illustration It is a law of influence that we become like those whom we habitually admire. WIio has not watched some old couple come down life’s pilgrimage hand in hand with such gentle trust and joy in one an other that their very faces wore the self-) same look? These were not two souls: It was a composite soul. Half a century’s re flecting had told upon them; they were changed into the same image. They had become alike because they habitually ad mired each other. It was reserved for Paul to make the supreme application of the law o f influence. He himself was a changed man; he knew exactly what had done it; it was Christ. On the Damascus road, they met, and from that hour Paul’s life was absorbed in Christ’s. The effect could not but follow—on words, on deeds, on career, on creed. He be came like Him whom he habitually loved. “ So we all,” he writes, “ ‘reflecting as a mirror the glory of Christ, are changed into the same image,” Here is the solution o f the problem of sanctification in a sen tence : Reflect the character of Christ, and you will become like Christ.-— S elected . Worshiping God A cts 17:22-34 Memory Verse: “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matt. 4:10).
