trembling, lest he -should darken the sim ple message o f the cross with words of human reasoning. His speech was not with enticing words; he did not attempt to move his hearers’ emotions by tricks of oratory; his appeal was to something deeper than their mere psychical natures, for it was an appeal in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. There could be no doubt of the presence and power o f the Holy Spirit when he preached, because in spite o f his “ bodily presence which was weak, and his speech which was contemptible,” those who heard had been loosed from the grip of Satan, turned from darkness to light, and brought unto God as saved sinners. His avoidance o f the wisdom of the world was in order that their faith should stand in God alone (v. 5). The danger was that those who heard him would think more of his manner than of the matter he preached; in the latter case, whatever other results there might be, the preaching would produce followers o f the preacher rather than followers o f the Christ of the preacher. This was the dan ger looming up in Corinth. The wisdom o f men, however great, would sooner or later give place to higher wisdom as gen eration after generation advanced in knowledge, but when the Christians stood in God alone, nothing would ever move them because in Him is all the wisdom of all the ages. Lesson Questions 1 :10-18. In what tender language did Paul begin to speak o f the factions in Corinth ? What was his appeal ? Who were the leaders around whom the various sects had gathered? Why had Paul not bap tized many persons? What did Paul de clare his mission to be? What was the center of his teaching? How do you ex plain the expression, “the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness” ?* Can you show that the same is true today? What is the effect of such preaching upon those who believe? 2:1-5. What was Paul’s determination? Could he have used “excellency of speech” if he had so desired? Wherein lay his power? Why did he choose simple lan guage? Golden Text Illustration The Moravians sent a mission to Green land. Finding the natives totally ignorant o f the meaning o f sin, guilt, righteous ness, and justification, they thought it well to begin by educating them. The result was so utterly negative that they determined to leave. While waiting for a vessel in which to sail, one o f the missionaries thought he would test the truthfulness of his transla tion of a portion of the Gospels by reading it to the natives. After he had read o f the sufferings and death of Jesus, there was a silence. At length the chief arose and said, “Read it again.” When the reader had finished the second reading, the chief said, “What you read, is it true? You say, ‘It is true!’ Then why did you not tell us that first? Now we know, you must not go. We will listen to the words o f the Man who suffered so for us.” Needless to say, the missionaries re mained and saw much fruit. The cross conquered! “I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Cor. 2:2 ). “God for bid that I should glory, save in the cross" (Gal. 6:14). together. A n d on every Sabbath, Paul went to the syna gogue to p r e a c h . After a while, Silas and another helper, Timothy, came to Corinth, too. L e s s o n S t o r y : As Paul went about in this b i g c i t y preaching, he be came almost dis

couraged. He wanted so much to preach to the Jews,, but many of them wouldn’t even listen. Worse than that, they opposed him. He was almost too discouraged to go on. Just when he was feeling this way and needed help, two things happened. First, he found that the ruler of the synagogue him self was a believer. When the Jews found out about this, many of them who were thinking about becoming Christians had the courage to join the church and be bap tized. This made Paul happy. Then there came a second thing which made Paul decide to remain for a while in this big city o f Corinth. The Lord spoke again to Paul in a vision. He said, “ Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.” So Paul knew then that he was doing God’s will by staying and preaching in that city, and that he must not let himself feel discouraged. He didn’t seem, to him self, to be successful always, but God knew that people were listening to the message that Paul was preaching, and that, as al ways, the hearts of some of them were touched so that they believed.
