"GIVE ATTENTION TO READING, TO EXHORTATION, TO DOCTRINE" (I Tim. 4:13).

cerneth me” ; or, to render it a little more literally, “ In that which relates to me, the Lord will do what is complete.” Here is a thing to be quietly sure of. . . . He will give me no trial above what I, in Him, am able to bear. He will not mistake my character for another’s or my circum stances for my friend’s. He will, with regard to discipline, training, and trial for me, adjust it to my case. He will make no mistakes . . . I will hear what God the Lord shall speak abojjjt this also. There is something here, or something there, He has yet to say to me, about my falling short, about the slowness and imperfect ness of my obedience, the coldness of my faith and love. The Lord will carry on His lessons; He means to make them complete. I will be quiet, and rest beneath the hand and voice of my Teacher. I k I I -H a n d l e y C. G. M o u l e .. NOVEMBER 12 “Simon, son o f Jonas, lovest thou me?” (John 21:16). Observe that our ever-loving.and tender Saviour questioned Peter about his love in plain, set terms. The physician feels the pulse to judge the heart, so the Lord Jesus tested at once the pulse of Peter. He did not say: “ Peter, do you repent?” Repentance is a very blessed grace, and very needful, but it is better to look at Peter’s love, because it is quite certain that if a disciple loves his Master, he will deeply grieve over having denied Him. The Lord does not even ask His follower about his faith. That would have been a very proper question, too. But this question includes that other. The Lord left every other point out of consideration, because He included it in one all-comprehensive question.— C harles H addon S purgeon . Thee will I love, my Strength, my Tow ’r; Thee will I love, my Joy, my Crown;.’ ;' Thee will I love with all my pow’r, In all Thy works and Thee alone; Thee will I love till sacred fire Fills me with pure desire. ■ B J ohann S cheffler . NOVEMBER 13 “ Because ye belong to Christ” (Mk. 9:41). How much is mine, because I belong to Christ! In a word, “all things” are mine, for Christ is mine, and I am His ! Because we belong to Christ, high the honor, great thè privilege, lasting the happiness in volved therein. We may well be glad and grateful. But the recognition of this rela tionship supplies a motive to a holy, de voted, and consistent life. Because ye belong to Christ, “see that ye walk cir cumspectly.” Because ye belong to Christ, “be ye holy in all manner of conversa tion.” Because ye belong to Christ, “let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt.” Because ye belong to Christ, “serve the Lord with gladness,” abounding in every good word and work.—J. T. W. NOVEMBER 14 “Behold a smoking furnace and a burn ing lamp” (Gen. 15:17). The smoking furnace tells of suffering and purification, while the lamp of fire tells o f illumination and heavenly zeal. It is the experience through which not only the literal seed of Abram, but all his spiritual posterity, have to pass. You can trace the smoke o f the furnace in thè church’s march. You can easily trace it in your own life. . . . The path of suffering, testing, and trial must be trodden by every child of God. . . . Even the Captain of our salvation was made perfect by suffer-
