we have not, we must say, even to theo logians, if they would deter us from being suppliants for the heavenly grace, “ Hinder me not.” . . . The Spirit is come, but He is also coming. The Spirit is not like gold, coming once for all, but like dew, descending continually. You brought in some flowers just now, and, the fragrance filled the room, but they have not ceased giving forth the perfume; it is filling the room still. . . . The well-balanced Christian, while gratefully adoring God for the Spirit already his, will not hesitate to ask that more o f the power of that Blessed One may be bestowed upon him.— J. B. F iggis . NOVEMBER 17 “I believe God” (Acts 27:25). Paul is very sure of God. “ It shall be even as it was told me,” he declares. Have I a similar confidence—that God is so almighty that no combination of hostile circumstances can defeat H im ; that God is so all-wise that no devices and strata gems can outwit His intelligence, or nega tive His will? ) , . . His methods I do not forecast; the details of His procedure are hidden from me; but I can rest on Him. Paul realizes that man must help God. “Except these abide in the ship,” he assures centurions and soldiers, “ye can not be, saved.” . The divine plans are un shakable, and the divine counsels will not fail ;, but they make room for human, co operation ; they demand human obedience. — A l e x a n d e r . S m e l l ie . NOVEMBER 18 "A sk me o f things to come . . . con cerning the work of. my hands command ye me" (Isa. 45 :11). To man is given to command God with all this authority and power . . . Heaven, with all it has, is under tribute to carry out the ultimate, final, and glorious pur poses of God. Why, then, is the time so long in carrying out these benedictions for man? . . . God is willing to give, but we are slow to ask. How easy is the con dition, and yet how long we are in fulfilling it! In the invitation “Ask o f me” is the assurance of answer. The shout of vic tory is there and may be heard by the lis tening ear.— E . M . B o u n d s . Jesus, Thou Sovereign Lord of all, The same through one eternal day ;HV Attend Thy feeblest follower’s call, And oh, instruct us how to pray; Pour out the supplicating grace, And stir us up to seek Thy face. There are three passages in which Christ speaks of the work we ought to do, and where He teaches the principle of the overflowing cup. They are very remark able. First, “as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.” Are you willing to be sent into the world as Jesus Christ was sent ? . . . The next passage carries us a little farther; it teaches that if you go into the world loving and trusting Christ, you shall do the works that He did, “and greater works than these shall ye do.” Have you worked any miracle today ? We talk about Christ’s miracles. He said, “You shall do greater ones.” Think of that! Jesus opened the eyes o f a blind man, and he looked up and saw the face of his Lord. Have you ever opened your friend’s eyes so that he looked up into the face of Jesus? That is a greater thing. •The other passage is the strangest o f all. Christ said to the Father, “ The glory that thou gavest me I have given them . . . m B—S elected . NOVEMBER 19 “ Even so send I you” (John 20:21).

ing. “I have chosen thee,” says Jehovah, “ in the furnace-of affliction” (Isa. 48:10). . . . All precious' things have to be tried. It was one of the laws o f Jehovah. “Everything that may abide the fire, ye shall make go through the furnace, and it shall be clean” (Num. 31:23). It is a law of nature, and it is a law of grace, that everything that can abide the fire—and only precious things can abide the fire— must be tested.—J. G regory M a n t l e . NOVEMBER IS “ You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph. 2:1). We speak o f the “dead past,” of our “ dead selves,” of “ dead days,” days that hâVe passed out of count, of “dead money,” motley that is not in use. Paul does not hesitate to say that our life -fs like that, it .is out of count, i t ’is not in use, until God touches it. Death is a condition of things beyond human repair. . . . If one is dead, no matter how you dress or decorate the form, perfume or beautify its apparel, death is still death, the body is still a corpse, the lifeless form is only made the more pathetic by your artistic drapery. There is no self-help in a dead body, no self-determination in a corpse. This is Paul’s powerful way of saying that when we could not help ourselves, Christ camé to our aid; He raised us from the dead, He lifted us from the grave. Lord, I was dead. I could not stir My lifeless soul to corné to Thee; But now, sinee Thou hast quickened me, I rise from sin’s dark sepulchre. — J o h n M a c B e a t h .
