will humbly rejoice that his name is writ ten in heaven. The joy of the redeemed is really a nobler joy than the joy o f service. ... . You looked up, and you saw God writing your name in heaven among the redeemed. What was your joy in any ser vice, in any gift or word or deed compared to your joy in tha,t redemption? —W. M. C l o w . NOVEMBER 30 “ O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his merciful kind ness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth forever. Praise ye the Lord" (Psa. 117). “As the rose is the most beautiful and lovely blossom, in color, form, and fra grance, among the flowers, so gratitude is a very queen among the graces of human life. It not only blesses and cheers the re cipient, but enriches and deepens the thank ful soul. As its absence saddens, so its presence gladdens.” This very attitude of thankfulness cre ates a capacity within us to receive more of God’s blessings and develops a habit of soul wherein we offer the sacrifice of praise continually. Let us, therefore, on this Thanksgiving Day offer our grateful praise “unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and do minion for ever and ever.” — A l l ia n c e W e e k l y . THE HIDDEN KING AND THE USURPED THRONE [Continued from page 340] the kings” instead o f “ the throne o f his father David” ? Why, if not to indicate that this little story is a historic miniature and enacted prophecy o f our now concealed but coming King, of whom it is said, “ Yea, all kings shall fall down before him; all na tions shall serve him” ? The next expression is scarcely less unique and typical. “And all the people of the land rejoiced.” Seldom could this lan guage be used literally of any human ad ministration, and surely not of the reign of Joash as a whole. May we not, rather, un derstand that the Holy Spirit seized upon this sudden and transitory outburst o f the people’s enthusiasm as ideal and typical of that really universal and enduring joy at the coming coronation of our L o r d ? Throughout the generations, the great mass of the people have been groaning under the burden o f militarism, graft, and the failure o f justice for the poor and needy. But there is a King, unseen and uncrowned as yet, who shall “judge the people”—yes, all the people—“with righteousness, and the poor with judgment, and shall save the children o f the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.” Then, and not till then, shall all the people o f the world rejoice. “And the city was in quiet.” Peace and quiet in the capital city—the normal condi tion when the king’s son has been seated upon the throne of the kings and the wicked usurper is slain. This is all finely typical. O f our coming King it is said, “In his days shall the righteous flourish ; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.” The Hague tribunal may issue its decree. It is but a “scrap of paper.” But when our King from His throne speaks the word, militarism and all its horrid brood will go to their eternal doom. Then shall He say to His capital city, “ Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.” And so it shall be. Looking forward to such blessed consummation, our daily prayer may well be. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

which hid the Presence, and hid them as they thought. The effulgence was too strong for the eye dimmed by the mists o f sin, and too pure for the heart which had admitted another object—self. « H - H e n r y F . B o w k e r . NOVEMBER 27 “Pray one for another" (Jas. 5:16). First, are we asking for each other the special thing annexed to the command: “ That ye may be healed” ? Prayer for physical healing is clearly included. How many around us are not spiritually healed! Are we definitely asking this for them? O f how many of His own people is the Lord saying, “They knew not that I healed them” I Not knowing what was done in them, they are not witnessing to the power o f the Healer; not seeing, like the Samari tan, that they were healed, they are not giving Him thanks. Are we asking that they may realize the healing, so that they may glorify the Healer? — F r a n c e s R id l e y H a v e r g a l . NOVEMBER 28 “ To wait fo r his Son from heaven” (1 Thess. 1 :10). If He should come, and the saints with Him, ere the day be done, will there be any among them whom we have won for Him? Let hot that way of stating the case bring despair to any heart. Have they been living the life of loyalty to the Lord, caring for their own children as in His sight, bearing the witness o f godly living among their neighbors? Then let them have no care for statistics. The doctrine of the advent does not produce a fever for statistics. It creates an inspiration for ser vice.—G. C a m p b e l l M o r g a n . A Christian mother was given a win ter’s holiday in California. Some one asked one of her daughters, “When do you ex pect your mother home?” “ Oh, we are looking for her any day now,” was the eager reply, “she’s stopped writing.” On the same ground, the Christian may expect the Lord Jesus to return at any moment.— S elected . NOVEMBER 29 “Rather rejoice that your names are written in heaven" (Lk. 10:20). That, at first sight, seems a lower and less noble source o f joy. There is a reli gious cant which says that a man should be so busy caring for other men’s souls, that he has no time, and no need, to care for his own. To point out the mote in one’s neighbor’s eye and to neglect the beam in one’s own is not after the mind o f Christ. When a man knows all that redemption is, and all it may mean, when he feels all its healing and uplifting power, when he real izes that all is due to the will o f God, he
