Who are Red Welcome to the world of Red. In 2008 when we first started pioneering inflatable paddle board technology, we believed in challenging the status quo. We made a commitment to never compromise on performance, looks or quality. We believed in designing products that delivered an authentic experience. 16 years on and our driving force remains exactly the same - creating high quality products to inspire adventures that enable people to enjoy the water and all the benefits that come with getting in, under or on it. At Red we believe in the universal truth that people’s need for the thrill of adventure will never fade, and the intrinsic desire to connect with the water and world will never change. As a certified B Corporation, Red is dedicated to taking steps to be more responsible through everything we do. So much so, every product with a Red logo has been designed and tested by our team in the UK to ensure it meets the demands of adventure.

Stand up for the planet We’ve teamed up with Love the Oceans, a non-profit conservation organisation making big waves in Mozambique to establish a Marine Protected Area as well as community projects such as teaching local children to swim. Its bottom-up, community-led approach is particularly inspiring, empowering residents of Jangamo Bay to become ocean stewards for their own blue backyard, and so we jumped at the chance to develop a board that would help them on their mission. And that’s where our first-ever limited-edition paddleboard comes in. We’re donating 10% of the profits from this one-of-a-kind SUP to Love the Oceans, meaning that paddlers can embark on a sea-faring adventure knowing that the ripple effect will spread far beyond their own shores. If that’s not enough to make you feel all warm and fuzzy, our MSL inflatable paddleboard features a distinct illustration inspired by the very sea life and ecosystems that Love the Oceans is fighting to protect. PHOTOS Emma Dingley WORDS Robyn Dawson

The ocean-inspired artwork entitled Water Is All was designed by Circe Oropeza as part of a competition where members of our global SUP community were invited to create a unique design for our Ride 10’6” SUP. The winning monochrome line drawing can be found on the underside and deck pad of our limited-edition paddleboard, and one that will no doubt make you the envy of all your waterborne buddies. Better still, it’s the chance to own a little piece of Red Paddle Co history and be among a small club of sea-faring folk to own our unique and first-ever limited-edition board.

It’s a Record

PHOTOS Sarrah Zonny WORDS Rachel French

We know that people using Ice Baths has grown in popularity due to the amazing mental and physical benefits the cold water brings. We caught up with Mark Hughes, Director of ‘One Life Live It’, and a breath-work and cold-water exposure professional to learn more about the positive benefits of cold water for your mental health and his goal was to set a new simultaneous ice bath World Record. The Guinness World Record attempt took place on Leighton Beach, Western Australia. To count as a Guinness World Record, at least 250 people had to submerge themselves simultaneously in icy water of less than 6 degrees for three minutes. 575 participants entered to be a part of the largest group to get in an ice bath at the same time. Of those, 509 people managed to endure the cold temperatures for the full 3 minutes, setting a Guinness World Record.

We caught up with Mark Hughes, pre-event to find out the reasons behind this incredible achievement. What made you want to create this incredible event? Having used cold water immersion for many years myself and knowing the positive mental and physical benefits, we started introducing it to clients who we coach to help them change their physical state and mindset, to help them change direction and break out of anxiety and depression. In running fortnightly group ice baths, we have built a big community and saw the opportunity to create a lot of awareness around the benefits of the cold and the idea came up to stage a World first event to truly get the awareness out there. Can you go in depth about the charity the event is raising money for and why it is so important to you? Beyond Blue is the largest Australian mental health charity which enabled us to gain awareness instantly when we mention who we’re raising fund for. While smaller organisations are vital too, we had a single-minded vision to make raising awareness the focus; by default, everything needed to have the best visibility and possibility of enabling us to reach this goal. Personally, I have, in the past, struggled with crippling anxiety and depression and I now work with many people in similar positions, not least of all following covid or those that do fly-in-fly-out work. Beyond Blue provides a framework to help people in all areas of mental health, so we wanted to further help the awareness grow. Cold water exposure, and breathwork, which we use regularly has been proven many times over in significant peer-reviewed studies to have a multitude of physical and mental health benefits, not least of all the incredible increase in dopamine (improves mood and sense of wellbeing) which lasts several hours after taking an ice bath. This alone can be enough for participants to ‘see’ a light at the end of the tunnel and help them focus on changing other aspects of their lives. 7

How many participants took part? We had 575 people – this was the maximum we could fit into the pools and with the ice supply available (nearly 3 tonnes of it!) We want to highlight that the event has a low carbon footprint as the ice is made in a low carbon output facility and we are pumping water from the ocean, to drain back into the ocean, with the whole event’s remaining carbon footprint being offset through a donation to Greenfleet Australia, an organisation that plans native trees to offset household and commercial emissions. Can you share with us any top tips for getting into ice baths and the benefits you have experienced? Firstly, to focus on the outcome and know that the body will adapt to the cold and benefit tremendously, don’t let the mind take over and break the focus. Secondly, know that breathing is the key until you get used to the ice baths. After this initial shock of the cold, turn to nasal breathing in for 3-4 seconds, breathing deeply into the belly, thus triggering the parasympathetic nervous system to start relaxing the body and slowing the heart rate. Make the exhale longer (6-7 seconds) through pursed lips; the exhale is the powerful bit. Try to relax and keep the focus on the breathing. The benefits are substantial, but as a quick summary they include: • Regulating the nervous system (makes us adapt to stress and relax more easily) • Stimulates brown adipose tissue creates heat through a thermogenesis process burning glucose and fat molecules – our bodies adapt to the cold exposure and over time help increase metabolism and energy. • Helps regulate the lymphatic system. • Boosts your mood. • Boosts the immune system. • Relieves soreness in muscles and helps with muscle recovery in certain situations. • Improves deep sleep.

Totes Amazeballs Versatility [vur-suh-til-i-tee] noun The state or quality of being useful for or easily adapted to various tasks, styles, fields of endeavor, etc.: Stu: My role at Red is to create campaigns and develop ideas of how to visually bring products to market. Product can usually find it’s own path, a change robe is warm and waterproof and is designed for changing in, a waterproof backpack is for keeping belongings and keep them dry. But the release of our waterproof tote bag has been a bit more of a tricky one. Because of its versatility. The new tote bag is one of those products that you can use daily, for almost any activity. The ammount of ideas the team had we would have needed a 2 week shoot to cover them all. But we have budgets to be selective in the activities we chose. I had spoken to David from ‘nowhere2far’ a few times previously, they are a SUP tour experience company based in Lagos in Portugal and are die hard Red fans. David has always been super keen to get us out there for a sunny shoot, this turned out to be the perfect oppotunity. WORDS Stu Walker - Creative Lead & Cat Heraty - Product Designer

Thanks to Davids local knowledge and connections we were able to plan out a great shoot all from our desks here in Devon. Throughout this article are a very small snipet of the images we captured and the scenarios we covered. But I can confirm the trip out to Portugal was totally worth it. The light, the settings.....ah, all so beautiful. I am looking forward to rolling out the content throughout the summer.

The new tote bag is one of those products that you can use daily, for almost any activity.” “

I think thats enough rambling on from me, and its time I introduced you to the person behind the tote. Cat Heraty is our Lead Accessories Designer here at Red and is the person behind the product. Over to Cat ... We always start each product concept by identifying a problem to solve. The concept of the tote bag very much came from something we felt was missing from Red’s offering. As much as we love a really good backpack, there are times when being able to see what you’re rummaging for is optimal. We strongly felt that a tote would really compliment our offer, but sticking true to our core values we wanted it to be waterproof and versatile enough to take everything life throws at it. Beach days out, gym class, the weekly food shop, kids swimming lessons, cycling kit, climbing kit, you name it, we thought of it and tried it out..

PHOTOS Beetle Rhind

11

We wanted something that complimented our busy lives in a stylish, flexible and versatile way. Something you could take to the beach, the supermarket, the gym, that you could confidently throw about and rinse out and repack. The molded base, the padding and beaded edge help the bag to keep its shape so it doesn’t collapse when empty. We added some signature waterproof pockets, dyed to match webbing straps, attachment points, subtle branding and a mag clip to keep the top edge closed. Inside there are bottle holder pockets and a smart fold away magnetic wet/ dry divider for keeping wet and dry items separate. We hope you like what we have created and it fits into your lives as much as it fits into ours.

The Call

WORDS Jamie Harman

Adventure starts at the edge of your comfort zone

It’s a quote framed on the wall of Jamie’s house. It wasn’t there before he undertook the Great Glen challenge, but it now hangs front and centre for all to see. The 92km endurance event had a profound effect on him and, as the UK sales manager for Red, a big impact on the team here at Red. As an avid paddler, Jamie is no stranger to the world of short- distance SUP racing. So, when he mentioned in passing one day that he had entered the Great Glen, it initially drew little attention from the team. As someone who is happier out of the spotlight, Jamie began preparing for this almighty challenge away from the hustle and bustle of the Red office. That was until it dawned on us just how far 92km is. What’s more, this was Jamie - not a professional athlete or paid team rider but a mere mortal. Just your regular guy attempting to take on something remarkable.

PHOTOS Mark Pickersgill/Sam Glazebrook/Stu Walker

After a fair bit of arm-twisting and not-so-subtle hints, he allowed us to document his journey as he began preparing for this awesome, bucket-list event. As his story unfolded, we were ready (cameras and all) for the physical and mental hardship that would almost certainly be involved. What we weren’t prepared for was the third, often-overlooked dimension for taking on a challenge of this magnitude - the emotional connection. When you paddle for 92km you have a lot of time to ask yourself, why? Why do we paddle? We all have our reasons, and those reasons are as fluid as the water, they change day to day, year on year. This is why we called the film ‘THE CALL’ – it is as much a film about a SUP challenge as it is a documentary about why we are drawn to the water and why we paddle. Thinking of taking a long distance paddle of your own? Whether it’s 10km or 100km, we caught up with Jamie to hear more about this almighty challenge. After numerous film nights, screenings and Q&A sessions across the UK we were keen to learn more and glean some hints or tips to inspire those looking to take on a new adventure...

1. What is the Great Glen? JH: The Great Glen is the canal that cuts across Scotland. Stretching from coast to coast it is some 92km in length and is made up of a number of canals that interlink huge lochs (lakes) – the largest of which is the world-famous Loch Ness which is just over 36km long and 2.7km wide. Framed by mountains reaching to the sky it is an awe-inspiring location on which the water conditions can change from glassy flat to ocean-like swells in a matter of minutes. The GREAT GLEN SUP CHALLENGE takes place every year in September and participants can attempt the challenge in either the non-stop, one day event or over 2 days with an over-night stop in the central village of Fort Augustus. 2. Why were you drawn to the Great Glen in particular? JH: It is the perfect blend between being a physical and mental challenge. Having done a fair few 10-15km races over the years, I knew the canal sections would feel familiar but when combined with the sheer size and length of the lochs it was a big step into the unknown for me. That was what drew me to the Great Glen – that feeling of not knowing exactly how I would feel or cope with the distances. The scenery is also spectacular! 3. Why did you choose the 14’0” Sport+? JH: During the development of the new Sport+ range and MSL®800, we spoke a lot about helping paddlers take on longer distances. The boards are designed to open up the endurance side of the sport for anyone, so I wanted to really put it through its paces without the filter of work and design but purely from a personal experience. I wanted to see how it would match up to the task and if it could help give me the confidence to keep going no matter what the weather threw at me on the day. At 28” wide the 14’0” SPORT+ is wider than your average race board which gave me an amazing amount of confidence when in the middle of some of the lochs.

17

4. What was your biggest learning in terms of kit and equipment? JH: Practice in the kit combinations you might have to paddle in on the day. On the lead up to the event I fell into the trap of going out for shorter paddles (10-15km) with just a small camelback, no food and comfortable clothing for the summer conditions. It meant that come race day when the water was 4-5 degrees I was not prepared for the decisions in terms of combinations of layers but also had my food in my bag on the front of the board rather than easily/quickly accessible in chest pockets. Mixing and matching the kit you’ll wear on event day removes pre-start uncertainty whilst easy access to food means you’re not over doing it straight out of the blocks.

The water is black and you suddenly feel very small. Knowing I had the speed and stability allowed me to put the power down even when my legs were tired, arms were burning, and back was cramping was a big help. If I had been on a narrower board I think I would have spent more time in the water wasting energy and not feeling comfortable. Of course, the other major benefit is that it is inflatable which not only made it easy to travel up to the event by air, it was also super easy to exit/enter the water at portages without the worry of damaging the board – especially when your arms are jelly.

Jamie’s board of choice 14’0” Sport+ MSL Inflatable Paddle Board

The new 14’0” Sport+ inflatable paddleboard offers fast, long- distance touring and race-ready performance in a user-friendly shape. Efficiently slicing through the water under total control, this pacey tourer is ideal for experienced riders seeking speedy versatility, or progressive paddlers looking to go quicker and potentially get into racing. At 28” wide, the 14’0” Sport+ blends impressive speed with easy stability, ideal for comfortably extending your adventures and breaking personal bests. With long, parallel rails and a tapered nose, plus a Speed Tail for sharp water release, it boasts exceptional tracking and glide per stroke. Weighing in nearly 2kg lighter than our regular construction, our groundbreaking MSL®800 double-drop-stitch material combines with patented Rocker Stiffening System (RSS) battens for incredible rigidity. With a variable traction deckpad for intuitive footwork, adjustable flat bungees and three soft-touch carry handles provide touring comfort.

Running Wild

WORDS Duncan Slater & Adam Burns

Venturing into the world of white water paddle boarding can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience. If you’re a capable flat-water paddler or SUPsurfer looking for a new challenge, Red Paddle Co’s Wild range of inflatable paddleboards is your ticket to ride the rapids. In this guide – with expert advice from white-water SUP coach Adam Burns, Centre Manager at Willowgate Activity Centre in Perth, Scotland – we’ll run you through the essentials of getting started with white water SUP. Before you hit fast-flowing water, make sure you have the right gear. Alongside a board you’ll need a decent paddle, a helmet and a buoyancy aid/personal flotation device (PFD) designed for white-water activities. If you choose to wear a leash, make sure it’s a waist-mounted quick- release attachment to reduce the likelihood of leash entrapment in fast moving water. Depending on your risk assessment, in white-water you might choose not to use a leash at all. (As per the latest guidance from Paddle UK.) When it comes to choosing a board, Red’s Wild range has been developed specifically for white water paddle boarding. Both Wild boards feature a pronounced nose rocker and high sides to help them glide over the white-water more easily. Liam and George from the Red HQ team are white-water paddlers, with connections to top riders in the community, including white-water SUP coaches, who were able to feedback on the development and testing of the boards. The 9’6” WILD is best for technical white-water, drops and river surfing – the shorter length allows the user to be more agile in the rapids.

PHOTOS Stu Walker

The 9’6” also features a raised deckpad for foot positioning and stability when running technical sections. The 11’0” WILD is more stable, and faster – a white-water touring board that’s easier to paddle flat sections and carry gear. Before considering fast-flowing water you need to be solid with the core paddling techniques and stances. Practice on still waters before progressing to more challenging environments. Knowing how to maintain balance, paddle efficiently, and perform basic manoeuvres will build your confidence and improve your chances of success. Learning skills like managing your height and how to fall safely will increase confidence, competence, and safety while on white water. When you’re ready to head into a white water environment it’s important to start somewhere you can build confidence and skill level. Choosing a slow flow where you can focus on technique will ensure development and success while having a great time.

PRODUCT SHOWN - WILD 9’6 MSL

Liams’s board of choice 9’6 Wild MSL Inflatable Paddle Board Designed for experienced river-riders, the 9’6” Wild inflatable paddleboard offers control and agility in full-on rapids. With its shorter length, this technical white-water board excels for advanced paddlers in graded river conditions. Pronounced nose rocker helps take drops, ride and punch through stoppers, break in and out of eddies, while 34” of width and 280L of volume provide a steady ride. Constructed in our well-proven, ultra-durable MSL® drop-stitch material, the 9’6” Wild is resilient and reinforced enough to take all the knocks a river can throw at it. Deep-cut diamond EVA deckpad ensures sure-footed traction, combined with raised centre and rail risers for a solid stance. Robust 4.6” twin US box river fins enhance tracking, drive, and manoeuvrability yet are short and flexible enough to avoid hang- ups. Five grab handles for reliable recovery plus easy put-ins, get- outs, and portages, while a high-traction cargo zone up front helps secure kit to the deck.

*Please note: In accordance with guidance from Paddle UK, we strongly advise that you DO NOT use any leash system while paddling on white water. Paddling on fast flowing water, graded rivers and rapids comes with inherent risks. Always seek professional training and never paddle alone.

Adventure in the Hills Meet Kate, Danny & Katie – Unpacking the Adventure Waterproof Backpack v2.0 WORDS Kate O’Callaghan PHOTOS Mark Pickersgill

Last December we headed to Haweswater in the scenic Lake District for some mid-winter trail riding with spouses Kate and Danny O’Callaghan @itskateoc @itsdannyoc and their good friend Katie Houghton @katieridesbikes to see how our New Adventure Waterproof Backpack performed after a long day of riding. Together Kate and Danny have travelled the world with their bikes and ridden some of the most scenic downhill descents you can find. We caught up with Kate post-shoot on her home turf to learn more about what draws her to the hills time and time again.

Words Kate O’Callaghan. We all know that spending time outdoors is so powerful; the scenery, the elements, the adventure. When my world feels like it’s spinning a little too fast, I take myself outdoors and things begin to slow down, it creates space to make decisions in peace and quiet. I love the calmness it brings and the clarity that comes alongside that. For me and Danny as a couple, our adventures have made our relationship so much stronger. It has taken us around the world but also in our daily lives just spending our time together and sharing

incredible experiences while enjoying all the benefits of the outdoors while laughing together (and at each other). The more we do the more we want to do. When we are trying new things as a couple, we’re both learning and failing together. We push each other and help each other to achieve. Mountain biking is my go-to escape, especially during times of adversity – a release from the pressures and stresses of life, a time to truly switch off and focus on nothing but the trails ahead. Most of all what I love about mountain biking is the community, the sense of belonging, the support and the encouragement, our crew makes it something extra special. I’ve been exploring and adventuring all over the world by mountain bike, experiencing culture and taking in scenery you wouldn’t necessarily access when on the main path. For us it is the thrill of the descents, the sense of achievement on the ascents, pushing yourself harder than you thought you were capable of. That said, I’m a big believer in everyday adventures – you don’t have to be the best, the strongest, or an elite athlete to enjoy the benefits. Danny is stronger and more confident on the bikes so he can ride harder, and faster, but we adjust the rides we do together so we can both enjoy them. Of course, the wilder you go the bigger the impact, but a simple walk along the local canal is perfectly fine to connect you with nature, you just must take the time to look around. The sunrise, the sunset, the movement in the clouds, the sounds and smells,

the nature, the wildlife! Everything about it brings me joy, it’s impossible not to feel lighter - even in the horrendous weather - the feel good feeling just comes a little later! One of my favourite things to do is a dawn raid, riding/carrying my bike up a hill to catch the sunrise. It’s hard to put into words the effect of the freedom from interference whilst sitting in silence watching the day come alive, a calmness unmatched by anything else. The perfect weekend for me would start like this with a decent trail back down for breakfast, then a chilled paddleboard session for sunset, some tasty food and great company, a few beers in the evening and then another adventure in the hills the next day! When you have long days like this it’s important to me to have the right kit for comfort, functionality and ease. When you are in the saddle or hiking – whatever it

is you might be doing – if something isn’t the right fit or doesn’t feel comfortable, it can cause a lot of issues and distract you from the day. A backpack rubbing on your shoulders or bouncing around isn’t only annoying, but if you end up with friction cuts or something that’s going to cause you problems. Our local terrain here is pretty rugged, which makes for some fun descents, but you really notice if something isn’t quite right with your kit. No-one wants to head home early because of their gear letting them down, particularly when you are enjoying views like this. I also like to have what I need with me so I can keep going longer and focus on trying to keep up with Danny! Red’s new backpack is great for van life adventures, ideal for everything we might do on a van trip: biking, hiking, swimming, paddleboarding etc. I love that versatility and it’s a great winter pack – fully waterproof with plenty of space, and comfy back protection too. The essentials I take with me in my backpack are always layers, loads of snacks, water, first aid kit and most importantly a good crew and a sense of adventure!

The book gives us an in-depth tour of the area and tips on where to go, so you can follow in her paddle strokes. Here’s what Jo had to say: “It’s been an absolute honour to write about this most special part of the country & the place where I took my first SUP lesson, I knew at that point that SUP was something very special. I didn’t know that I would one day write two books about the joy of paddleboarding & the beautiful places we have in England, Scotland & Wales. Equipment Stove, fuel, knife, chopping board, small saucepan, spoon

Ingredients Broth;

400ml water, 2 tblsp soy sauce, 1 tsp white miso paste, minced thumb of ginger, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 tblsp fish sauce, 1tsp dried seaweed (e.g. wakame or kombu), 5g dried porcini mushrooms, 1tsp bonito flakes Accompaniments; 1 pak choi, thumb of ginger, 1 carrot, 2 eggs, 300g straight to wok noodles, 200g sliced cooked pork belly, 50g beansprouts, 2 spring onions, 1 red chilli, sesame seeds Method Add a small bit of oil to the saucepan and fry the sliced, cooked pork belly until crisp and set aside in your bowl. Add water to the pan and bring to a rolling boil. Add both eggs and boil for 6-7 minutes to achieve a soft boiled centre. Remove from the pan and discard your water. Add all your broth components to the empty pan and bring to a simmer. Whilst heating, peel your carrot and ginger and slice into thin pieces. Thinly slice your spring onions and red chilli into slices. Chop the pak choi into quarters and add to the now simmering broth along with the noodles. Cook in the broth for a couple of minutes and then begin to assemble your ramen bowl. Add your sliced ginger, sliced carrot, beansprouts to your bowl containing your crispy sliced cooked pork belly followed by the now softened pak choi and noodles from the broth. Peel your eggs and half them. Add 2 halves to the bowl before topping your veggies and meat with the hot broth from the pan until the bowl is nearly full. Garnish with spring onions, red chilli and sesame seeds.
