Relentless Love, Steadfast Devotion A TRIBUTE TO MOMMIES

With Mother’s Day coming up this month, I knew I wanted to use my space in the newsletter to pay tribute to the power of mommies. At first, I thought I’d share some stories about how great my mom is, but I decided to approach Mother’s Day a little differently. (Though don’t get me wrong — I could praise my mom until I’m blue in the face.) When I think of mommies, I think of Jesus. That may sound a bit odd, but let me explain. Jesus was born of our Heavenly Father, but He still had a mommy. That tells me God wanted His Son to experience the bond that only exists between mother and child. I can’t think of a better way to explain how crucial the role of motherhood is than that. If the Son of God needed a mommy, no doubt we mere mortals do as well. Mommies do extraordinary things every day. They are unfailingly selfless, giving, and kind. No matter where or when we’re born, we can all use a mommy in our lives. As a father myself, I’ve seen this true heroism firsthand. I know now like I never knew before that being a mommy comes with a mountain of responsibilities. If I had to tackle all the tasks my wife excels at, I’d be left trapped under an avalanche. How Amy manages to do it, I’ll never know. I guess I should just thank my lucky stars and chalk it up to mommy magic.

up for their children when they’ve been wronged. I’ve also seen mommies stand by their children when they’re facing tough criminal charges. Whatever the situation, mommies are always willing to put the needs of their children first. It’s inspiring to witness and reminds me that there is no love quite like motherly love. Those are just some of the amazing feats of motherhood I’ve seen firsthand. Now I want to turn it over to you. For just one minute, think about how your mommy and the other mommies in your life make the world a better place. Consider their relentless love, steadfast devotion, and unerring kindness, and reflect on how these traits have made you a better person. It’s not a hard exercise, but I think you’ll be surprised by how moving it is. All too often, we regard maternal love as a given and take it for granted. This year, take the time to acknowledge the mommies nearest and dearest to you. I promise you they’ll appreciate it. In closing, I just want to express my sincere gratitude to all the mommies reading this newsletter. What you do on a daily basis is nothing short of amazing. –Rob Usry 864.582.0416

ROAD TRIPS DON’T

HAVE TO BE PAINFUL

Include the Whole Family

Once the travel games no longer pique anyone’s interest, try an activity that can be fun for the whole family: a traditional road trip game. If you have a car full of storytellers, try “Fortunately, Unfortunately.” The rules are simple. The first person starts by saying, “fortunately,” and mentioning something good about the road trip or the destination. The next person (moving clockwise) then follows by saying something “unfortunate” about the previous person’s statement. Take turns with every passenger in the car. If someone stumbles, they get a strike; three strikes and you’re out. The last passenger standing wins. We get it. Sometimes passengers don’t want to play games. Occasionally, they’d rather relax or take a nap. However, your listening material doesn’t have to be limited to Dad’s favorite music. Instead, consider listening to a family-friendly audiobook or podcast, which can make the longest and most boring parts of your trip an entertaining or educational experience. Almost any popular book is available in audio form, but it can be hard to find an enjoyable podcast. “Transistor” is a science-focused podcast that explores subjects kids and adults will find fascinating. Or if you’re looking for something fictional, try “Storynory,” in which the narrator tells fairy tales and legends from all over the globe. Play an Audiobook or Podcast

Summer is right around the corner, which means you’ll soon pile the whole family into the car, ready to brave the road for a vacation. Everyone knows that riding in the car for hours can be torture. But with a little creativity, you can turn the worst part of a long trip into a fun event.

Pack a Travel Game

When the excitement of the family vacation starts to wear off, keep the peace and entertain your kids with a travel game. Many board game manufacturers offer travel-sized versions that are easy to pack and play in the car. Before your next road trip, consider purchasing digital Yahtzee, which packs all the fun of the classic game without the dice, or IQ Fit, a logic game with over 100 challenges. Both games cost around $10 and can provide hours of entertainment. Testimonials SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US

“My daughter was in a horrible accident that was caused by some teenagers in another car who decided to play ‘chicken.’ She was in the back seat without a seat belt when the accident happened. Her face hit the back of the driver’s seat. The impact of the crash broke several bones in her face and around her eye. Thankfully, she has no scars! However, she did miss a lot of school and lost a lot of weight. “We decided to contact Holland Law Firm. Everyone there was kind and helpful! Initially, we spoke to Bob Holland, and he introduced us to Rob Usry. My daughter received her settlement over the next four years. All we had to do was tell Mr. Usry the facts, and he did the rest.

“Rob handled a personal injury case involving our son. It was a rather complicated and very emotional case, but once Rob became our attorney, he handled everything. He is an excellent attorney who is not only very knowledgeable about the law, but is also just a great person! His kind and calming demeanor was very helpful to my wife and me, especially during depositions and dealings with opposing counsel. He was always able to calm our fears and let us know that he was there for us, whatever we needed. Having Rob with us was about more than just having a great attorney in our corner — it was like having family fighting for us. He went above and beyond what I expected, and I’m sure he will for you too. I highly recommend him if you need an excellent and professional attorney who treats you with kindness and respect.”

“I was very impressed with the dedication and expertise of this law firm!”

What Happens When Your Child Is Injured?

CHILD INJURY SETTLEMENT CONSIDERATIONS

In our years of experience, we’ve seen the anxiety of parents over their child’s injury from an accident or dog bite transition into worry about their child blowing the money they’ve received. Luckily, you don’t have to spend sleepless nights fretting over your child taking

approve the settlement if it’s in your child’s best interest. To protect the money, the law provides two main options. The first is to appoint a conservator, who can be a qualified parent, guardian, or other party. Via probate court, the money is placed somewhere secure, like an interest-bearing account. The court also needs to approve the withdrawal of any funds to be used by the conservator. Additionally, the system protects the child from mismanagement or theft of money through a probate bond. All funds are transferred once the child turns 18. The second method involves establishing a structured settlement, which avoids the conservatorship process. Instead of a lump sum paid upon the child turning 18, it will be paid out in installments chosen by the parents from a variety of options that can last until the child is 25, or even later in some cases. This option usually has lower fees than conservatorship. For settlements of $10,000 to $24,999, conservatorship allows you to bypass the need for court approval. Without a conservator, you’ll need approval from a circuit court judge or probate court. You can still do a structured settlement. Settlements under $10,000 do not require a conservator, but you can still decide on a structured settlement plan. At Holland & Usry, we give special care and attention to children’s cases. We’ll make sure that your child gets the settlement they deserve, and we’ll explain your options for protecting that settlement.

All settlements exceeding $25,000 after attorney fees and costs must be approved by a state circuit court judge. The judge will only

GET YOUR GRILL ON

2 May Holidays, 2 Reasons to Grill

Is there anything more American than grilling a burger outside on Memorial Day? This year, there’s another reason to fire up the grill that weekend: In addition to being Memorial Day, May 28 is also National Hamburger Day! Enjoy this delicious coincidence by heating up the grill, gathering the fixings, and making one of these tasty burgers at home. The Classic Burger Nothing beats the American classic: a seasoned beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, a squirt each of mustard and ketchup, a layer of crunchy lettuce, some

thinly sliced onions, and a couple of zesty pickles. For a homemade touch, make the pickles yourself by soaking cucumbers in a brine of vinegar, dill, and salt.

The Portobello Burger For a delicious veggie burger even meat eaters will love, use a portobello mushroom as your patty. Remove the stems, then marinate the mushrooms for 15 minutes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and a clove of minced garlic. Season the shrooms with salt and pepper, then place them on the grill just as you would any other burger. Gruyere cheese is the perfect creamy topping, and you can use grilled focaccia bread topped with garlic aioli. As you bask in the late spring weather and the inviting smell of delicious food this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the Americans who gave their lives so we could enjoy these freedoms, and thank those who served.

The Mediterranean Burger Take your patty to the next level with a

Mediterranean twist. Mix feta cheese and garlic into your ground beef before forming your patties. Serve it on a grilled ciabatta bun topped with marinated red peppers and arugula for flavor and texture. If you want to get extra fancy, pour a bit of balsamic reduction over the patty before adding the toppings.
