If phantom authors lack the spectral powers to conjure haunting prose from politicians, maybe it’s because these days, the politicians are so scary that they frighten away the spirit of literature. Not that the spirit of literature, or the shade of anything even vaguely interesting, ever went near Bernie Sanders’ book WhereWe Go from Here: Two Years in the Resistance . Bernie could have used a ghost, any kind of ghost... just a minor poltergeist... to move his manuscript into the trash basket.

This month... books by Oval Office Aspirants. It is an irksome fact. Politicians running for president will have a book... like cats will have a litter box. It stinks. Modern politicians show no signs of being able to write. Some modern politicians, not to name names such as Donald Trump and Beto O’Rourke, show no signs of being able to read. The Grump, with careless to buy these books used... Not a penny in royalties went to those who are mewing and clawing in the Arm & Hammer Super Scoop.) The Truths We Hold: An American Journey by Kamala Harris wasn’t held onto for long by The Grump. It was soon tossed across the room. Not to say it isn’t an amazing book. Here is a woman with a terrifying political talent who goes in little more than a dozen years from a minor hack in the City Attorney’s office to San Francisco DA to California Attorney General to U.S. Senator. Yet the thriller she narrates is a damn dull tale. (Ten-word summary: Kamala supports all things good and opposes every bad thing.) How did she turn her Cinderella story into an ashcan of tedium? She probably didn’t. Politicians employ ghostwriters. Buried at the back of the book on the fourth page of “Acknowledgements” is a sentence beginning, indifference, randomly picked three books from the clowder of mangy strays seeking the 2020 nomination.
