Low Gross was won—after a match of cards—by Maile Fries, Cindy Bollman, Ellen Haffa, and Barbara Lancaster. For Spring Fling pictures, please click here. WGO-18 is delighted to welcome our newest member, Cindy Walls, to the group. And we are delighted to report another hole in one by Jane Sullivan—on the 2nd at Quail Village in Naples, Florida.

CWGO CAREER WOMEN’S GOLF ORGANIZATION

In addition to our 9-hole play dates at ARL (Wednesdays), FFX (Thursdays), and both courses on Saturdays, CWGO will have the annual Keller Cup tournament on Saturday, 9 June, at ARL. This is a 2-person better ball event that uses modified Stableford scoring. Sign up on the club’s golf calendar. Also in June will be the enormously popular Member-uest tournament at ARL on June 27. With the theme “Born to be Wild,” the event gives members of CWGO and WGO-18 a chance to bring together friends from other clubs for a day of friendly competition, excellent food, and camaraderie. This event will be preceded by a fun (and somewhat wacky) Par 3 Challenge on the evening of June 26, with refreshments on the patio afterwards. Those not interested in special events are encouraged to join us for 9 or 18 holes on Saturdays and weeknights. Look for emails from the weeknight play coordinators to access a Google docs signup sheet that ensures you’ll be heading to the first tee with other group members. Saturday signups are online here. CWGO welcomes news members! Interested? Contact us at CWGO.membership@gmail.com for more information.

The purpose of the USGA Handicap System is to make the game of golf more enjoyable by enabling golfers of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis. The system provides fair Course Handicaps for players regardless of ability, and adjusts a player’s Handicap Index up or down as one’s game changes. At the same time, it disregards high scores that bear little relation to the player’s potential ability and promotes continuity by making handicaps continuous from one playing season or year to the next. A basic premise underlies the USGA Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Posting scores in person immediately following the round at the course where the round is played is the preferred way to expose scores to peer review. This method of posting shall be used whenever possible. Scores can also be posted via the Internet at www.vsga.org (at the middle of the Home Page) or at www.ghin.com (see “Post Score” at top of page). There is also a GHIN app available for your smart phone. Scores can be posted year round, weather permitting. Temporary ratings are established during the winter months at each course. A USGA Handicap Index compares a player’s scoring ability to the scoring ability of an expert amateur on a course of standard difficulty. A player posts scores along with the appropriate USGA Ratings to make up the scoring record. A Handicap Index is computed from no more than 20 scores plus eligible Tournament Scores in the scoring record. It reflects the player’s potential because it is based upon the best scores posted, ideally the best 10 of the last 20 rounds. A USGA Handicap Index travels well from course to course, as well as from one set of tees to another set of tees on the same course. A player’s Handicap Index determines the number of strokes a player receives depending upon the length and difficulty of the course being played.
