get set for Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario

for SFX Falcons

HAMMOND | One point can make all the difference sometimes in basketball and the SFX Falcons are working on making sure they get every point possible on the scoreboard during their games. Coach Scott Stoqua is satisfied that St. Francis Xavier is on the winning side of the school’s overall record so far during the first half of the 2014-2015 high school league basketball season. But he thinks the senior boys’ squad could be doing better on the court with their defence sometimes. “Currently, our league record is 3-1 and, overall, including our exhibition games, we are 5-2,”Stoqua said.“Our loss in league play came against L’Escale. The final score was 64-37.” Stoqua noted the Falcons’ zone defence had gaps and the team made a poor show- ing on its chances to score foul shots. During the team’s second regular league game against St. Thomas Aquinas of Rus- sell, the Falcons clipped the Ravens 33-24 with“a much better effort all around”, noted Stoqua, including the defence. The third game of the season before the Christmas break saw the Falcons slash the Wildcats of Rockland District High School 57-41. “A good game for us offensively,” said Sto- qua. “Our foul-shooting, which has been struggling all year, was excellent. This was the difference in the game.” Stoqua noted that the Wildcats dominat- ed the Falcons against the boards, with SFX losing ground during its defensive rebound- ing. The same problem showed in a game against Russell High School. SFX edged Russell 46-44 after leading the first quarter play. Stoqua said “the game got away from us” in the second half of the match but the Falcons’ foul-shooting skills helped keep St. Francis Xavier on top of Russell High. Stoqua credited his players’ dedication to improving their foul-shooting skills with making a difference against both Russell High and RDHS. “Since the beginning of school, our guys have come into the gym every day and shot four (foul) shots,” he said. “This work is start- ing to pay off.” The next games for the Falcons after the winter exams break are against Vankleek Collegiate, on February 4 at SFX, and on the road February 6 against Casselman. The fi- nal league game for the Falcons is home on February 11, against Le Sommet.
