Corson Green honours his father’s hockey spirit

Corson Green is putting his time to good use at the Canadian International Hockey Academy. When not in class at his studies, he spends as much time as he can either on the rink or in the gym.

play forward for Clarkson University’s divi- sion one team in the collegiate league. “I have some pretty good roots in hock- ey,” Green said. “I always used to skate with him at a young age. He taught me himself to skate and all the other skills you need in hockey.” At one point during the senior Green’s own hockey adventures, he got an NHL draft call in the mid-1980s from the Winni- peg Jets but there was no follow-up invita- tion to the club’s tryouts camp. His son may be able to carry the family name into the NHL ranks, with a little more skills sharpen- ing courtesy of the CIHA. “Being on the ice here every day, and in the gym every day, it’s what a hockey player can dream of,”Green said. “I’ve gotten faster and smarter with the puck.” Unlike maybe some of his fellow CIHA classmates, Green felt right at home during the recent cold snap in Rockland. Almost like being back across the border in Pots- dam. “Pretty much the same weather,” he said. “Maybe a little colder up here.” While he pursues his classroom stud- ies and perfects his skills on the ice during scrimmages and games for the CIHA Voya- geurs, Green keeps his goals in mind for the days that follow after he graduates from the academy. First step is getting a draft call from the Ontario Hockey League. “Then take it from there,” he said. “Maybe get some college (hockey) exposure.”

ROCKLAND | Corson Green is developing into the kind of power-play threat that hockey coaches dream of having on their roster. The six-foot-one softspoken native of Potsdam in upper-state New York is most often left defence when he’s on the ice. But not always. “Right side on the power play,” he said. “I have a pretty good one-timer.” In hockey slang, that means he is very good at grabbing a pass for a fast shot to score. Almost like he was using a laser to guide the puck into the net for a goal. Before coming up north to attend the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA), the 15-year-old defenceman used to play for the St. Lawrence Thunder, based in Massena, about a half hour’s drive north of his home town. It’s a good team and the hockey scene in St. Lawrence County where Potsdam and Massena are located is fine. But when he got the chance to enroll at CIHA, he was ready to pack his hockey bag and head across the border. “It’s a lot better hockey up here in Cana- da than what I was playing in Potsdam,” he said. “Up here it’s a lot more skilled.” Green is carrying on the spirit of his father through his hockey studies. His dad used to

Maybe, if the puck luck plays his way, there will be a Green on the next Team USA at the Winter Olympics. “It’d be a dream to put on my country’s sweater,” he said. “The NHL would be cool too.”
