Hockey grads celebrate greatest goal of all

(Montréal, QC), Sydney Linnick (Highland Ranch, CO), Jace Lis D’Alessandro (Mon- tréal, QC), Martina Maskova (Czech Repu- blic), Guillaume Pelchat (Sainte-Julie, QC), Gregory Rogers (Marystown, NF), Natasha Steinle (Denver, CO), Nicolle Trivino (Geor- getown, ON), and Kayla Trujillo (Pueblo West, CO). Castro received the Scholar Award for Top Graduating Student and a Founder’s Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence. Rogers was named the Top Male Graduate in Athletics and also received the CIHA Staff Award and a Founder’s Scholarship Award. Dunbar received the Top Female Graduate in Athletics and a Founder’s Scholarship Award. Maskova earned the Student Suc- cess Bursary. Trivino received the Charac- ter Always Award. Elias earned the CIHA Alumni Award for Perseverance and also a Founder’s Scholarship Award. Bourque received the Ontario’s Principal’s Plaque for outstanding academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement along with a Founder’s Scholarship Award. Steinle earned a Founder’s Scholarship Award.

Some of themhave spent a couple of years as part of the local high school student body. A fewhave just been here for a single year to get their Grade 12 and, more impor- tant, some of the best training possible to sharpen their puck-shooting, body-chec- king skills.They came fromall around the world and now they are leaving Clarence- Rockland as the Class of 2016 from the Canadian International Hockey Academy.

“We’re ready to jump,” said Valedicto- rian Colleen Castro. “We can see our whole lives spread out before us. When we hit the ground, I know we’ll be running. Because we each have a burning desire to succeed.” The Class of 2016 took their seats in the cafeteria at the Canadian International Hoc- key Academy (CIHA) for the June 9 gradua- tion ceremony, with family and friends flying from as far away as the Czech Republic or driving in fromnearby Ottawa. CIHA foun- der Robert Bourdeau had this advice for the grads: work hard and believe in themselves. “As youmove forward, you and only you are responsible for achieving the person you want to be,” said Bourdeau. “I hope we have helped you along the way. Think of life as a

jigsaw puzzle. You add to it, part by part. Be happy with your life.
