changed. The heart o f the natural man is c o rru p t (Jer. 17 :9). Like a fou l sp ring th a t cannot produce pure water, the heart o f th e un saved man cannot produce works s u ffic ie n t fo r his salvation. He needs a new heart; he needs new life . The Holy S p irit is th e Au tho r and G iver o f life. We all owe ou r physi cal existence to Him. “ And the LORD God form ed man o f the dust o f th e ground, and breathed in to his no s trils the breath o f life ; and man became a liv in g sou l” (Gen. 2 :7 ). The d is tin c tive element in m an's creation is th is “ breath o f life ,” fo r the phrase is altered to read “ the S p irit o f life ." Dr. Lockyer title d his fine book on the Holy S p irit, “ The Breath o f God.” The Greek word fo r s p irit [p n e um a ] means breath or w ind. A fte r C h ris t’s resurrection He met w ith the disciples, and John wrote, “ He breathed on them , and saith unto them , Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 2 0 :2 2 ). The Breath o f God is His own Holy S p irit. All who have not been born again o f the S p irit o f God are un saved because they are s till dead in sins. God is not the Father o f such persons nor can they cla im Him. “ If any man have not the S p irit o f Ch rist, he is none o f H is” (Rom. 8 :9 ). No man can be saved w ith ou t receiving the Holy S p irit. It is not co rre c t to say th a t a person be comes saved, and then a t some la te r tim e he receives the Holy S p irit. The receiving o f the S p irit makes one a C h ristian. Receiving salvation and receiving the S p irit occu r instantaneously, a t one and th e same tim e . KB
says, “ But as many as received Him [C h r is t], to them gave He power to become the sons o f God, even to them th a t believe on His name: Which were born not o f blood, nor o f the w ill o f flesh, nor o f the w ill o f man, bu t o f G od" (John 1:12, 13). The concept of th e New B irth o f C h ristians is com mon to the Gospel o f Ch rist, but th a t B irth does not come from hu man stock, th a t is, it cannot be passed on from parent to child. Every tru e Christian knows th a t he does not owe his salvation to na t ural descent, from physical o r b io logical causes, bu t to the saving wo rk o f the Holy S p irit. The grace o f God does not flow in human veins. Regeneration is accomplished by the Holy S p irit app ly ing the liv ing and powerful Word to the be lieving heart. The B ible speaks o f regeneration as a tran s la tio n o u t o f death in to life. Jesus said, “ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He th a t heareth My word, and believeth on Him th a t sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come in to condemnation; but is passed from death unto life " (John 5 :24 ). The unsaved man is described as being “ dead in tre s passes and s in s ” (Eph. 2 :1 ). Can a dead person give life to himself? Hardly! This is where the Holy S p irit enters the scene. He is “ the S p irit o f life " (Rom. 8 :2 ). More than th is , “ The S p irit is life " (Rom. 8 :10 ). Thus He only can im pa rt life , fo r “ th e S p irit giveth life ” (II Cor. 3 :6 ). This life is D ivine life; it is His own life which He shares w ith all who w ill receive it. If man's actions are to be changed, the source of his actions m ust be
