I bend over backwards to listen and ta lk w ith my kids and never in my life have I said, ‘What do you want to say a dum b th in g like th a t for?’ ” The d ire c to r said, " I know. As he said tha t, I saw three kids who ju s t th is week said, ‘ My parents are so nea t.’ " Then she added, “ And I’m very weary o f p ick ing up every Ch ristian magazine on th e market and reading how the church has fa iled its y o u th .” I know what she meant both as a parent and w rite r. It’s tru e many parents and teenagers s u ffe r h o rri bly from the comm unica tion gap b u t the re are many, many thousand men and women who d a ily and honestly have asked God fo r His w isdom and day a fte r day have seen His handiwork in th e ir lives and in th e ir teenagers’ lives. C e rtain ly it ’s tru e th a t many churches have no youth program , no burden, no h in t o f unde rstand ing but the re are, s p ring ing up all over th is country, churches and people who have spent much prayer, tim e , energy and hard, cold cash in w inn ing and wooing th e youth so the y could hear th e good news o f Christ. My church, fo r example, has a youth program involving 2 0 0 ju n io r highers, 200 high schoolers and even more college age. A l m o s t 20 0 0 attend each Sunday. The p ro gram consists o f eve rything from extensive m u s i c involvement to door-to-door v is ita tion . The kids are not only drawn in to a w o rship ex perience but a sharing, g iv ing m in istry. My own sixteen year old son, Rick, has been so m otivated fo r C h ris t th is past year th a t in Sep tem b e r he picked a sixteen-year-old frie nd and made him his p ro je ct fo r Ch rist. That teenage boy accepted the Lord th is January. R ick picked a new “ p ro je c t.” Tha t boy accepted C h rist in February. R ick is now looking fo r ano the r p r o j e c t . A church th a t m otivates kids like th a t is ce rta in ly not even com ing close to fa ilin g .
