Estate Services (CIOSS) Head of Sustainability

Main duties and accountabilities:

legislation and ensuring that the University can comply with statutory requirements • To be accountable for the production and development of the University’s Sustainability Policy and Plan, Waste Management Plan, Sustainable Travel Plan, Energy Plan, and Biodiversity Policy / Plan • To engage with Student Employability & Volunteering • To work closely with the Procurement Services to proactively contribute to financial savings opportunities (by-product) and to implement and measure the Sustainable Procurement Policy • In co-operation with the Director of Estate Services to develop and implement a Sustainable Construction Plan • To organise, promote and undertake awareness campaigns • To liaise and work in partnership with local bodies (e.g. local authorities, local businesses and the community) • To liaise and work in partnership with national and professional bodies (e.g. Environment Agency, others HEI’s, EAUC, IEMA) • To perform other duties as instructed by the Assistant Director of Direct Works and University Engineer commensurate with the post This job description summarises the main duties and accountabilities of the post and is not comprehensive. Post: Grade:

• To lead on embedding sustainability strategy into University policy and operations through the development of the University’s Sustainability vision and objectives, to include: • Writing business cases for changes in University policy, strategy or operations to make them more sustainable • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with all Colleges and Directorates to ensure there is a wide understanding of the University’s sustainability impacts and action on improving the University’s environmental performance from the whole University community. • Facilitating expert groups to ensure that sustainability is at the centre of University decision making in areas such as planning and business development • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with external peer groups including contributing to working groups, best practice initiatives. • To advise and influence the Colleges, services and senior management of the University • To advise and support the Sustainability Advisory Group • To ensure that environmental and sustainability factors are considered in all decisions (strategic and tactical) made at all levels in the University • To promote and coordinate the integration of environmental and sustainability issues in the University’s policies, services and operations • Assisting the Sustainability Dual Assurance lead with the effective leadership for the Sustainability Dual Assurance Group • To reinforce change by developing and championing the business case for sustainability activity • To inspire, educate and advise staff and students to enhance their understanding of environmental issues in order to help them reduce their environmental impacts at a local and national level • To advise on curriculum development issues • To manage the communication of relevant information and guidance • To work with L&D to advise on suitable training to increase awareness of environmental and sustainability issues, as part of the University’s staff development programme • To keep abreast of current and forthcoming environmental

Main purpose of the role

The Head of Sustainability is a new role reporting to the Assistant Director of Direct Works & Engineering reflecting the growing importance of improving the institution’s environmental performance and its sustainability.

The Head of Sustainability for the University of Exeter will be accountable for achieving the following key objectives:

• Act as the catalyst to drive forward the University’s environmental and sustainability strategy and agenda • Design, develop and implement the University’s Sustainability strategy and to set the organisational priorities in partnership with management, staff and stakeholders • Lead on key environmental and sustainable initiatives across the estate • To co-ordinate and encourage sustainability action throughout the University • Ensure that the University always complies with environmental legislation and requirements
