TRAFFIC TROUBLES

Rises in Population Could Create More Collision Headaches

As we celebrate the start of another new year, the Don Turner Legal Team wants to remind you and your loved ones to stay safe on our roadways this year — especially as the number of drivers on U.S. roadways continues to climb. The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) reports that drivers traveled 3.6 billion more miles at the beginning of 2019 than they did at the beginning of 2018. As the population in Georgia continues to rise, more drivers will subsequently populate our roadways, and with this increased traffic comes more chances for accidents, injuries, and death. You can prepare for increased traffic by remaining a vigilant driver and keeping your vehicle free of distractions, such as texting, eating, and loud music. Like all states, Georgia requires drivers to carry insurance for their motor vehicles in the event of an accident. This is intended to protect you and others involved in the accident, regardless of who is at fault. Specifically, in Georgia, policyholders are required to follow the 25/50/25 rule. This means drivers must be covered with $25,000 per person in bodily injury liability, $50,000 to cover multiple drivers, and $25,000 for property damage liability. But no matter how well you prepare, accidents can still happen.

Unfortunately, despite the law, approximately 1.16 million drivers in Georgia do not carry insurance, while other motorists only carry a minimum of $25,000 in insurance. This leaves those they are in a collision with vulnerable to costly medical and mechanical repair bills without any protection. You can protect yourself and your family with underinsured and uninsured motorist insurance. These coverage options protect motorists who are in a collision with another driver who does not carry insurance or does not carry enough insurance to protect other motorists and themselves. Costing anywhere from $10–$20 each month, these options can cover many of the additional expenses that come from a collision. No matter how well you prepare, accidents can happen. The Don Turner Legal Team can provide additional security with our free auto insurance audit . A traditional New Year’s favorite in the South, Hoppin’ John includes

black-eyed peas that are said to represent coins, a sign of prosperity for the coming year. It’s usually served alongside collard greens, which represent cash.

INGREDIENTS •

1 cup dried black-eyed peas

• • •

1 smoked ham hock 1 medium onion, diced 1 cup long-grain white rice

• •

5–6 cups water

DIRECTIONS 1. Wash and sort peas. 2. In a saucepan, cover peas with water, discarding any that float. 3. Add pepper, ham hock, and onion. Gently boil and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until peas are just tender, about 90 minutes. At this point, you should have about 2 cups of liquid remaining. 1 dried hot pepper, optional (arbol and Calabrian are great options)

4. Add rice, cover, drop heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes, undisturbed. 5. Remove from heat and let steam for an additional 10 minutes, still covered. 6. Remove lid, fluff with a fork, and serve.
