Message from the Mayor by Mayor Josh Morgan mayor@london.ca 519-661-4920 Dear Wortley Village residents, Here comes December, and boy, the colder weather has settled in since we last spoke! The air’s sharper, the sidewalks are getting special attention, and your local neighbourhood is ready to sparkle with sea- sonal cheer. I was delighted to
see Wortley’s “Christmas in the Village” event confirmed for Saturday, December 6th, with sleigh rides, music, tree lighting and a great opportunity to gather and celebrate together. We’ve moved together from November’s solemn reflections into December’s warm community gatherings. In Wortley, that shift is made easier by neighbours helping each other, local shops creating festive windows, and events that bring young and older folks together. At City Hall, we’re keeping our crews on standby to make sure our neighbourhood sidewalks and lighting stay safe and welcoming.
Thank you for making Wortley such a caring, connected place, whether it’s your involvement in the community, your support of local businesses, or your kindness to one another. My best wishes to you and your loved ones for a December filled with laughter, friendship, bright lights and the comfort of our neighbourhoods. Mayor Josh Morgan

Old South Business Awards by Ian Sterling Leishman
The historic Normal School ballroom was the perfect venue for the 2025 Old South Business Awards, presented by TD Bank, and thanks to the Wortley YMCA for the use of their space. Every nominee deserves recognition for their meaningful contributions to the community, along with so many other valued businesses that serve our area. This year’s Old South Business Excellence Award was presented to Dave Tuckey and Tuckey’s Home Hardware, not only for offering exceptional service and hardware since 1946, but also for their incredible support of community events, charities, sponsorships, ticket sales, and enthusiastic community involvement. Nicole Phillips, President of the Old South Community Or- ganization (OSCO), was honoured with the Local Champion Award for her outstanding leadership, compassion, and un- wavering presence in the community. She continues to guide OSCO with integrity, heart, and action, advocating for both residents and local businesses. Lastly, Al and Karen Stewart of Westland Gallery received the People’s Choice Award, voted on by both residents and local business owners. The gallery, located at 156 Wortley Road, and known as an Old South gem, is where Westland Brothers Paint & Wallpaper opened in 1886. They have fostered connection and pride while celebrating Wortley Village’s creative spirit. Learn more about the awards and recipients at www.OldSouthBA.com

Ward 11 Update from City Hall by Skylar Franke, Ward 11 London City Council 519-661-2489, extension 4011 • sfranke@london.ca Hello Wortley Villagers, It’s the most wonderful time of the year in London! December brings a special kind of sparkle to our city — twinkling lights, festive markets, and cozy gatherings that make winter something to celebrate. Read on for a few ways to enjoy this snowy month. Start the month at Victoria Park, where the Lighting of the Lights kicks off the season on Friday, December 5th, with over 75,000 dazzling bulbs and a giant holiday tree lighting up the night sky. Bundle up with a hot chocolate and stroll through the park to enjoy the display — it’s a tradition that never gets old. Lace up for a memorable winter adventure on Storybook Park’s scenic 250-metre skate trail, winding beautifully through the park. Warm up with classic treats like Beavertails pastries, crispy fries, hot chocolate, and more. Get in the holiday spirit with Christmas in the Village on Saturday, December 6th, with plenty of fun and free activities. Activities include a scavenger hunt, breakfast with Santa, games, crafts, cookie decorating, art activities, family photographs, and an outdoor market. Finish the day with the lighting of the lights at 4 pm! At the end of the month, join Londoners for New Year’s Eve at Victoria Park on Wednesday, December 31st, 2025, from 7 pm to 12:05 am. Victoria Park will come alive with fireworks, free outdoor skating, live music, and entertainment. Visitors can take in the holiday lights in Victoria Park to celebrate the New Year. As I wrap up my third year on City Council, I want to take a moment to thank the incredible residents of Ward 11 for your Protect the ones you love
trust, feedback, and collaboration. It’s been a year filled with challenges, learning, and meaningful progress — our thoughtful debates that shape how our city grows. What I value most is the spirit of engagement that defines Old South and our wider community — neighbours who care deeply, speak up, and work together to make London better. Your ideas inspire me every day, and I’m so grateful to represent such an active, compassionate, and creative ward. Here’s to another year of working together to build a city and a community that we’re proud to call home. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Best wishes, Skylar

Neighbour of Note – Mario Circelli “From Guy Lombardo to Garth Hudson, from Tommy Hunter to Kittie from Marie Bottrell to Denise Pelley and all the great musicians in-between and throughout the decades; there is no doubt in my mind, Londoners make world-class music,” mused Mario Circelli. He would know. He started studying music in elementary school, and began playing in bands in high school, continuing throughout university and college before switching to behind-the-scenes work as an audio engineer and producer. Mario worked in radio and television for almost 25 years, later moving into the communications field. He’s produced or engineered more than 45 records and com- pilation albums, and co-founded the London Music Awards and London Music Hall of Fame. He names his music performance highlights as opening for the Pursuit of Happiness , 3 O’clock Train and Blue Peter . “Sharing a stage with hundreds of amazing musicians from the London and region music scene and being a part of that scene was tremendously special,” he remarks. “We were a community, sharing gigs, sharing gear and supporting each other. Those folks were/are so talented, I knew they would be at home on a stage anywhere in the world. Some of them went on to prominence outside of our area. Another highlight would be opening in Toronto for The Pandoras, who were an American all- female punk band from Los Angeles. The band was among the first all-female rock bands to ever be signed to a major label. We played in front of 3500 people in Toronto and it was glorious.” But it’s his work at the Digital Creative Arts Centre at BGC London that Mario has found most rewarding. “We are, in a small way, helping youth to find their passion. Helping to spark creativity and watch the students grow swells my heart. It brings meaning to what I do. Watching students interact with
each other and form bonds helps me see that, in a small way, we are building community. Those things are more important than the many thank-you notes I get. Although they are very much appreciated,” he says. “The inspiration for the Digital Creative Arts Centre came from my realization that all these art forms (digital media) are interconnected. I was taught in Journalism school that we need to be specialists. One would be a writer, camera person, editor or reporter. Technology has merged all these disciplines. Today people need to understand camera work and shot composition, editing and often do their own research, writing and on-camera work.” Partnering with 28 schools across London and area, the Digital Arts Centre provides hands-on learning co-op opportunities to more than 200 students annually. Providing career-focused training in digital arts, the Centre issues more than 150 Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) certifications every year.

He has been an Old South Community Organization board member for many years and in many roles. Mario grew up in Lockwood Park. “We’ve lived in Old South since 1993 and we raised our family here. I always look back fondly on bike rides with the kids through the neighbourhood. And going to events like Gathering On The Green. I went to South Collegiate and played sports there. The first time I played in a band and performed in front of an audience at the school auditorium in Grade 11,” he recalls. I envisioned brittle, yellowed papers taken from an ancient trunk with a wisp of evil being released into the air as the trunk was opened. In this volume, he explores the dark side of humanity, intro- ducing us to a grim assortment of nefarious characters, one with having a “fondness for acts of indecency”. Mr. Rip boils it down to “people being nasty to each other”. Each of the five stories begins with the sort of curious grim expectation experienced when one is overturning a well-rotted log. There is an immediate introduction to the scuttling about of creeping lifeforms among the decay. The characters make an instant impression, often one which cannot be trusted. And there is the stuff of which they are scuttling about; a sinister detritus in which the story will evolve. It becomes a compelling Jason Rip launches ‘The Goblin and other Tales’ by J. Bruce Parker Old South resident and playwright Jason Rip has turned his pen to writing stories. Author of 100 plays, and 100 plays exactly, the themes of his work in theatre have crept into his recently published stories. On social media, Jason has been dubbed The Dostoyevsky of Goof Town , a title which he has embraced. It was this five-word review of his previous book, a volume he had given to a homeless person who read it and dubbed him with that honour. This is the portion of humanity with which he works with pro- fessionally. As a health worker for ten years, his clientele are the homeless, the marginalized, and the forgotten. This has become a both the crux and inspiration of his plays and prose. He tells me that his view is “not the view of the world through rose coloured glasses.” His theatrical work is engaging, but never leaves you with a deep sense of contentment. There is no happiness revealed at the end of a Jason Rip play. His previous book, My Gehenna: Sixty Scary Stories published just a year ago, was definitely defined by its title. He now follows up with The Goblin and other Tales , again dipping his bloodied pen into the realm of horror. Defined as “five novellas focused on human-centred horror”, we are introduced to the misfits of society who live beyond the fringes of scruples and sanity. The troubled and invective characters, often dubbed with curious names, transport the reader along a journey of both horror and humour.

Wortley Village Teens “Making Board Games Great Again” by William Palma A group of Old South teenagers has created a new board game called American Dictator , to spark conversation about the current U.S. political situation and get a few laughs along the way. The goal of the game is to take control of as many American cities as possible on the pentagon-shaped board. Players can build golf courses, resorts, and towers, and can steal cities from their opponents. Special spaces include an ICE Detention Facility, a Supreme Court where a chief justice helps you bend the rules, and a casino where the house usually loses. Players draw cards from a pile of Questionable Decisions. These include “Rename a Body of Water,” which requires payment for new maps, or “Fifty-First Folly,” where your hotel goes bankrupt because Canadians stop visiting.
Christmas Market on the Green The Old South Community Organization (OSCO) is again this year organizing a volunteer-run Christmas Market on the Green , December 5th (4 to 8 pm), and 6th (12 noon to 5 pm), at the corner of Elmwood Ave. and Wortley Road. Shoppers can browse the eight outdoor European-style home-built chalets all offering holiday shopping gifts and treats, while being entertained by choirs, the South Collegiate Band, London Citadel Band and piper Brian Elliot. Proceeds support various local charities. As of last year, the Christmas Market on the Green has raised more than $42,000 for non-profit organizations. The Growing Chefs Ontario chalet will have their tourtieres for sale as well as soups! Learn more about Growing Chefs at growingchefsontario.ca. Community volunteers and businesses have banded together to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Ontario. Their chalet will feature pretzels, cider and gluhwein. South Collegiate grads will be selling gift baskets and cookies to fundraise for the school’s prom. The Mylie Group will be raising funds for the Humane Society with treats for our four-legged fur friends. The Gift House chalet will be selling many different items, including cute hand-crafted items by Patty Lee of Chain of Smiles. Funds raised will purchase baby food for the London Food Bank. At the Brathouse chalet, Old South Village Pub will raise funds for “Homes for Heroes Foundation” (facebook.com/H4HFcanada) by cooking up sausage. They’ll also staff a second chalet selling gingerbread cookies and syrup to fundraise for the Freedom Syrup organization (facebook.com/freedomsyrup). The Farmgate Market chalet will offer fresh, local, and seasonal produce – right from their fields.
These teens have created their own company called E-Up Games which stands for “Elbows Up”, representing Canadian Pride. American Dictator and associated merchandise can be purchased from e-upgames.com. A portion of each sale will support the London Food Bank. The E-Up Games team (from left Jonathan, Lauren, William, Ben, and Adam) assembles games to ship to customers.

OSCOR Awarded to Karin Wrona At their November 2024 AGM, the Old South Community Organization (OSCO) presented Karin Wrona with an OSCOR. The award is presented annually to an Old South Londoner who has made a positive impact to the community. “Karin has volun- teered with OSCO for more than 20 years, assisting with the Silent
floor for the new venue. Karin has also staged model apartments as Indwell has opened two buildings, one in London and one in St. Thomas, even arranging for the donation of additional furniture and accessories. Her work exemplifies one of Indwell’s core values of dignity, offering a professional design to an affordable apartment.” “ Behind the London Food Bank exists a garden of vegetables and fruit trees that is managed by a dedicated group of volunteers called Team Tomato ,” explained Jane Roy. “For the past four to five years, Karin has helped prepare the ground in April and May, to water and harvest throughout the season, and prepare the beds for winter. With her deep knowledge of gardening and generous spirit, Karin has helped ensure that families in need have access to nutritious, locally grown vegetables. More than 3000 pounds of tomatoes, peppers, beans, and other vegetables have made their way from garden beds to kitchen tables across London so far this year. Her leadership and enthusiasm have turned Team Tomato into more than just a garden project; it’s a community effort rooted in care, sustainability, and compassion.” Congratulations, Karin – and thank you!

Remembering Chris When I interviewed Chris Trowell in 2018, the long-time Wortley Village resident and blues guitarist was leading the Bruce Springsteen co- ver band 10th Avenue , and the Chris Trowell Blues Band and also enjoying just getting together with local musician friends for pick-up gigs. Favourite memories included playing along with Phil Guy (Buddy Guy’s brother) and B.B. King’s daugh- ter, Dutch Mason, Hock Walsh and other blues luminaries at the Old Chicago’s Blues Club that he had co-founded. Just diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease, he was never- theless planning benefit concerts in support of the London Men’s Mission and to raise funds for the Kidney Foundation. Chris toured extensively but was a favourite with Londoners at Ledbelly’s, the Old Firehall, the Wortley Roadhouse, the Richmond Tavern, Mustang Sally’s, Eastside Bar and Grill, the London International Blues Fest and many other local live music venues. He survived kidney surgery but sadly succumbed to cancer in September 2025. A tribute concert for Chris was held November 2nd at the Eastside Bar and Grill. “Over 300 people attended the six-hour event, where more than 50 musicians performed to honour Chris’s lifetime of musical influence,” reported his sister, Tracy Trowell. “We heard stories of Chris taking musicians under their wings, musicians who said. ‘I want to be him one day’. He didn’t just play FOR people, he played WITH them. He wasn’t just a musician, he was a storyteller, a friend. Through music, he will always be present with us.”
Dave Semple – ‘Stories & Songs’ by J.Bruce Parker
If you know Wortley Village resident Dave Semple, his quality of generosity would first come to mind. The retired drama teacher with over 35 years’ experience as an actor and director has offered free workshops for aspiring thespians. As a guitar luthier, he has built and given away several guitars to those he felt needed them, as well as taught the instrument to seniors. It was no surprise that this talented craftsman created Stories and Songs – a fundraising event for the Palace Theatre. Dave is a voice of his community, and his voice regaled friends and fans with his music and personal reflections. His performance at ‘Procunier Stage’ on November 6th was perfect for an intimate evening. A comfortable parlour chair, and an antique table displaying the visual memories of his songs, were underscored with soft lighting. He picked from four guitars, regarding all as his ‘friends’, and explaining the history of each. His one-off marathon performance, just under three hours, was culled from seven books of poetry, two novels, four CDs and a warm and generous heart. He empties his pockets of childhood memories in song and spoken word, directing us to his beginnings as a five-month-old child being given up for adoption in Quebec. Love, acceptance and family become important themes in his music. His presentation was interactive as he requested ‘Dad Jokes’ in regard to his remembrance and relationship with his own adoptive father, as well as inquiring about a recent moment of ‘joy’ from his audience. And joy is something we need more of these days. Gathering a few young people to sit at his feet, Dave, in a most ‘grandfatherly’ and comedic manner, told an anecdote of something antiquated and nearly extinct: the vinyl record.
His final song was not his, but of his friend, musician Jake Le- vesque, a musical force of this city, who passed away in 2024. Following Dave Semple down his road of memory is often a very familiar journey as his mem- ories can be so relatable. Dave Semple’s books can be found at Amazon.ca. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, cardamom, allspice, nutmeg, cloves, pepper, ginger, and salt. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. Cover the dough and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. Preheat the oven to 325°F (≈ 163 °C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the chilled dough into ~1-inch balls. Place them on the baking sheet and bake for 12 to 13 minutes, until cooked through. Once baked and cooled a bit, roll the cookies in the powdered sugar to coat. Store in an airtight container at room temp- erature for up to three days.

With the rst snow covered or icy road drive this fall, drivers are quickly reminded of the dangers of winter driving. All Season tires and Summer tires become rigid in cold temperatures whereas winter tires are made from a different rubber compound that stays pliable in the cold. Winter tires, when installed in a set of 4, improve braking and maneuverability on cold and icy road surfaces. Laws that require winter tires in Germany and Quebec quickly proved well founded; winter collision rates dropped noticeably in those areas. Winter tires are an additional upfront expense you may wish to avoid, but, the cost savings of driving on all season tires (especially older, worn ones) may be quickly offset by sliding into a curb (and damaging your car) or having a small "fender bender" accident on a slippery road surface. The most valuable facet of winter tires is that they keep you, your family, and other motorists safer in the winter. If you are in the market for winter tires stop in and see us, we have many different options for different budgets and will help you choose the right tires for your vehicle. Thank you for a wonderful year, to our faithful, kind customers, suppliers and our business neighbours. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday. We wish you a Happy New Year! Be safe, be kind. Your Wortley Auto Service Team Did you know that we will also install your existing winter, give us a call or hop onto our website to make an appointment today! Safe Driving
