I envisioned brittle, yellowed papers taken from an ancient trunk with a wisp of evil being released into the air as the trunk was opened. In this volume, he explores the dark side of humanity, intro- ducing us to a grim assortment of nefarious characters, one with having a “fondness for acts of indecency”. Mr. Rip boils it down to “people being nasty to each other”. Each of the five stories begins with the sort of curious grim expectation experienced when one is overturning a well-rotted log. There is an immediate introduction to the scuttling about of creeping lifeforms among the decay. The characters make an instant impression, often one which cannot be trusted. And there is the stuff of which they are scuttling about; a sinister detritus in which the story will evolve. It becomes a compelling Jason Rip launches ‘The Goblin and other Tales’ by J. Bruce Parker Old South resident and playwright Jason Rip has turned his pen to writing stories. Author of 100 plays, and 100 plays exactly, the themes of his work in theatre have crept into his recently published stories. On social media, Jason has been dubbed The Dostoyevsky of Goof Town , a title which he has embraced. It was this five-word review of his previous book, a volume he had given to a homeless person who read it and dubbed him with that honour. This is the portion of humanity with which he works with pro- fessionally. As a health worker for ten years, his clientele are the homeless, the marginalized, and the forgotten. This has become a both the crux and inspiration of his plays and prose. He tells me that his view is “not the view of the world through rose coloured glasses.” His theatrical work is engaging, but never leaves you with a deep sense of contentment. There is no happiness revealed at the end of a Jason Rip play. His previous book, My Gehenna: Sixty Scary Stories published just a year ago, was definitely defined by its title. He now follows up with The Goblin and other Tales , again dipping his bloodied pen into the realm of horror. Defined as “five novellas focused on human-centred horror”, we are introduced to the misfits of society who live beyond the fringes of scruples and sanity. The troubled and invective characters, often dubbed with curious names, transport the reader along a journey of both horror and humour.
