Chapter 10
Six Key Elements of the Baret Scholars Program
A JOURNEY of discovery seldom adheres to a linear trajectory. It involves mean- dering, reflecting, exploring, learning, listening, collaborating and leading—a multidimensional phenomenon oc- curring across layers and moments. It respects the delicate balance between structure and freedom. The Baret Schol- ars year furnishes this time of discovery by providing the tools, structure, and lib- erty for this unique journey. Many students contemplate taking a year to explore but are often deterred by the uncertainty of how to utilize their time, a feeling that they might fall be- hind, or the perceived rigidity of available programs. They require the time, space, resources, and inspiration to elevate themselves and find purpose. The Baret Scholars program is meticulously crafted to offer this sense of structure within a realm of freedom.
The Basics: Time, People, Places
THE PROGRAM nurtures a comprehensive and holistic understanding of seven dis- tinct regions, facilitating a month-long immersion in each. Each month is divid- ed between a Tier 1 city and lesser-ex- plored places that might be off the beaten path. Student weeks are split between semi-structured weekdays and long weekends of exploration. Their weekdays feature inspiring talks, performances, in- terviews in the morning, and a menu of educational and experiential opportuni- ties for their afternoons. Critically, the Baret Scholars travel with faculty and staff. In 2025–2026, they will travel with 2 Deans, 15 Fellows, and 3 support personnel, including se- curity and medical officers. The Fellows guide, inspire, and mentor small groups of 10–14 students each, called Houses. The Fellows are experts in different fields— scientists, entrepreneurs, psychologists, journalists, artists, filmmakers, coaches, photographers—which correspond to the interests of our student body.
“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn.”
