a beacon of innovation and entrepreneurship. From 1990 to 2000 alone, an astonishing 29,000 ventures were launched, cementing the Bay Area of San Francisco as the top-ranked startup ecosystem in the US. This region’s unique synergy of talent, capital, and culture has made it a breeding ground for groundbreaking ideas and successful enterprises. Scholars visit a diverse array of startup firms, engaging directly with founding teams, industry leaders, and employees. Through these interactions, we gain insights into the entrepreneurial journey, experiencing both the thrill of victory and the lessons learned from failure. This fellowship is not just a series of visits; it’s a deep dive into the heart of what makes Silicon Valley unique. Students hear personal stories of perseverance, creativity, and adaptability from those who have shaped the tech world. Designed with Caren Hanssmann , who has an extensive background at Google, this fellowship offers an unparalleled chance to network, learn, and be inspired by some of the brightest minds in the industry. DAVID LYNCH OR LA LA LAND? LOS ANGELES/ HOLLYWOOD Los Angeles: home to Hollywood, where dreams and broken dreams coexist. Though the sign on the hill is a bit garish, Hollywood has enthralled us with great films and television shows since its golden days in the 1930s and 1940s. For more than a century, its gravity has pulled artists, A
actors, writers, and directors into its orbit. From there, it is up to a mixture of grit and luck to help them make their way. Students stay in Venice, Hollywood and Los Feliz, experiencing the diversity of Los Angeles’s landscape and culture as they move from the sun-kissed Westside, marveling at Santa Monica’s lushness, to the darker, but potentially more captivating Eastside. Along the way they visit Hollywood’s extravagant studios and
UCLA’s film program to workshop with students and faculty, while also meeting with local filmmakers from vibrant communities that are fostering independent cinema. All the while, like true artists, they make the mundane and the marvelous objects of their camera. Designed with Ronan MacRory , a graduate of UCLA’s program in directing and film production, this Fellowship includes collaboration between students on a non-verbal, expressionistic documentary capturing the metropolis in the medium that has made it so iconic.

Smokies are one the largest protected wilderness areas in the Eastern US with elevations reaching 6,600 feet and covering 800 square miles. Students camp each night along the trail, cooking (and carrying) their food and provisions. As part of their journey, they engage in activities such as wildlife observation and geological exploration, deepening their understanding of ecological systems and natural processes. They also cultivate essential outdoor skills such as navigation, campsite setup, and wilderness survival techniques. This fellowship was designed with Daniel Weiser , an environmental economics major from Cornell University and self- described “hippie in a suit,” whose love of nature was nurtured in the wilds of west Texas from a young age.
Morning Program where we meet with eminent Mexicans from different walks of life to hear about what is at the center of their lives, their work, their problems and their ambitions for the country. Designed with Daniel De la Torre Velasco , who was born in Michoacán and is a graduate of Columbia University’s International Studies program, this Fellowship gives students a strong understanding of Mexican art, culture, economics, politics, and history.
and the single largest site for asylum seekers in the United States. New York then, is inevitably also a crucible for migrant law, a place where the fates and rights of asylum seekers in these United States are to be decided. Students get the perspectives of humanitarian lawyers and human rights advocates, and discuss the state of asylum seeking with UN officials and legal scholars. To get a wealth of perspectives on the vocation, they also engage with partners from prestigious law firms and in-house counsel at top companies, and hear from faculty and other representatives of the very best law schools, like Columbia and Yale. Designed with Claudia Kahindi , a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, this fellowship aims to provide a variety of lens on NY’s legal
