RIO THE REDEEMER RIO DE JANEIRO Some would say that there is no other city as dazzling as Rio De Janeiro. The dominance of nature in this urban landscape is second to none and everything you’ve heard about it is true: gorgeous beaches, forest trails within the city, cycling paths along the beach, markets, museums and the exuberant energy and sense of humor of the Cariocas that are always ready to drink an ice cold chopp , listen to some Bossa Nova and engage in a great conversation. Our students engage in the preparation for Carnival at Mangueira, one of Rio’s most beloved samba schools, playing their part in creating costumes and other essential elements in the preparations that samba schools face in order to parade and compete at carnival in the famous Sambodromo. But all this beauty comes with B

INTO THE AMAZON MANAUS, AMAZON RIVER The Amazon rainforest: the largest and most important forest in the world and home to the most biodiversity on the planet. It is where the opulence of colonial wealth meets the rich, enduring cultures of the indigenous peoples. Beginning in the grandeur of Manaus, symbolised by the extravagant Opera House built during the rubber boom, students journey into the heart of the Amazon, where indigenous cultures thrive in harmony with nature. This journey gives us a profound insight into the contrasting worlds shaped by colonial exploitation and the resilience of native communities. The trip is taken in conjunction with Araçá Experience, the only indigenous-run operator A

in the Amazon, where our scholars’ experience directly supports vital conservation efforts. Led by the legendary Saro, a native of the Amazon, we get far more than a simple glimpse of the jungle. Saro’s aim is to allow new eyes to experience the Amazon as

capital, yet the intimacy of a small town. On the students’ journey south, and following in the steps of famous explorers, they navigate through the Strait of Magellan, Beagle Channel, and weather permitting, Cape Horn. There, at the southernmost tip of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, they see where Pacific and Atlantic oceans collide to create a veritable cauldron of surf, wind, and icebergs. Nature is as stunning as it is raw in this region and the austral skies expand about you. Sea lions and Magellan penguins are common sights. Students hike on glaciers and experience the way of life of the Argentinian. Designed with Daniel Weiser , who has a degree in Environmental Economics from Cornell, this Fellowship is a journey our students carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Inhotim is home to pavilions created by some of the most important contemporary international artists such as Matthew Barney, Doug Aitken, and William Kentridge. Designed with Ronan MacRory , a graduate of Oxford University, this Fellowship offers students the opportunity to discover the rich art and architectural heritage of Brazil, including an internship at the internationally respected Inhotim art institution. through one of the most beautiful states in Brazil, Minas Gerais, on an itinerary consisting of approximately 213 miles (344 kilometers). As the name suggests, it was the mining state under the Portuguese empire, and its rich mineral wealth made it a center of art and architecture during Brazil’s Golden Age. This fellowship offers an immersion into slow food culture, baroque art and churches, and stunning contemporary art and architecture.
