One student saw this opportunity as a chance to give back and say thank you to the Rady Children’s doctor that changed her life. Daniela Carvalho, MD, medical

Her team sold gluten-free, nut-free cookies—complete with a website, marketing strategy, podcast and advertising—and raised more than $500. “Rady Children’s is a big part of my life,” she says. “Rady Children’s gave a lot to me, and I’d like to give back.” At the culmination of the months-long project, the patient presented a check to Dr. Carvalho. “She just was so proud,” says Dr. Carvalho. “As a physician, to see her go from more on the shy side to such a beautiful young lady who’s strong-willed and willing to help others with the same issues that she has, it’s just incredible to see how much she’s grown.”

“When she was really losing a lot of her hearing before she got the implant, she couldn’t say Dr. Carvalho and somehow it came out as Dr. Zhivago,” says the
