COST FOR REDEMPTION The King of Ethiopia once captured, as prisoner a British citizen named Cameron. The Englishman was taken away to a huge stone castle and securely placed in a stone dungeon. Six months elapsed before the British government found out about it. They asked the Ethiopian monarch to release him but their request was not granted. Within ten days ten thousand English soldiers were aboard ships sailing for Ethiopia. When they landed on the distant shore they still had to march 700 miles under a hot sun in order to free Cameron. By now the prisoner had become so weak that he had to be carried by stretcher back to safety. It was computed that this expensive expedition to rescue a single British subject cost the government some 25 million dollars. That is almost inconceivable until we see how it fades into a mere nothing in the light of what it cost the Lord to save us from our sins. Christ Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, gave His very life that we might receive our eternal ransom. The price He paid was far more than all of the money in the world put together. It took the shedding of the Saviour’s own blood, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. Listen to the words the Holy Spirit gave Peter to pen for our admonition, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and with out spot.” * The greatest fault is for one to be con scious of none. SPIRITUAL FOOD Dr. R. G. Lee has made an interesting study which indicates that a bird can go nine days without food, a dog 20 * *

days, and a turtle over 500 days. Fur ther, a snake can live 800 days without food, and a fish more than 1000 days. For man, however, it seems that two weeks is about the limit. Having tried to diet on numerous occasions, most of us might feel that about 1/S of a day was even difficult. Dr. Lee’s point is that there are some “turtle” Christians who go 500 days without much real Bible meat, eating from the honey and spiritual bread of the Word of God. Have you ever noticed that the ex hortation is not to read the Scriptures, but rather to study, to meditate upon them, comparing spiritual things with spiritual? We must put some real con secrated effort into our personal devo tions. Perhaps the reason so many peo ple get very little from their Bible study is somewhat akin to the reason why maple syrup is high-priced. Approxi mately 85 gallons of sap has to be gath ered in order to obtain a single gallon of syrup. To know the Word of God one must realize that it doesn’t come through laziness. To put it simply, there must be gallons of devotion, coupled with more gallons of yieldedness to the Lord, before there can be true growth in the knowledge of the Scriptures. So may we find maturity and the abounding joy and perfect peace of the Saviour.

The men who have moved the world are those who by God's grace have not been moved by the world.

BETTER, NOT BITTER For the one who is living a victorious spiritual life, trials should make him better and not bitter. Unfortunately, this is not always true. In an allegory, there was a piece of wood in the hands of a master craftsman. It kept complaining bitterly because its owner seemed to be whittling away unmercifully. He even 21
