Port Moresby

Nearby Beaches Ela Beach is in the heart of Port Moresby. While not recommended for swimming, the revamped beach frontage is a pleasant place to exercise in the late afternoon and you will see many sports teams gathering here to train and get active as the sun sets. Sero Beach is a 15-minute drive from the city and the place to be if you want to get onto the local waves. The Sero Surf Club can also help arrange kitesurfing expeditions. For more information see details on surfing, p51. Loloata Island Resort is a luxurious weekend destination, accepting day visitors for a fee to swim, kayak, dive or snorkel at nearby Lion Island. Fisherman’s Island is a 20-minute boat ride from POM and a popular weekend water sports spot. Bring lots of sun protection and water as the island has no shade or facilities.

cassava cake, sago pudding and smoked fish. A tip is to save veggie scraps (not bread) to feed the extraordinarily large fish in the lily ponds on the uni’s picturesque grounds. Adventure Park & National Orchid Garden These well-maintained gardens with a popular waterslide at 14 Mile, about 20 minutes’ drive out of the city on the road to Sogeri, are built around a manmade lake where you can fish or take a paddleboat ride. Admission is free, but rides cost K5 each, paddleboat hire is K10pp per half-hour, and waterslide K20 for an all-day pass. The adjoining Orchid Garden, which boasts 3000 orchid species – the largest collection in the Southern Hemisphere, along with birds of paradise and other

Be cautious of rocks and large branches just below the surface, and always test the depth carefully before diving in. It is advisable to go in convoy with other vehicles for added security.
