HIGHLANDS If this is your first visit, nothing will prepare you for the beauty and natural wonder of the Highlands region. The rolling mountainous terrain is at once breathtaking, thrilling and wonderfully serene. Bring plenty of memory cards for your camera! Two of the most visited towns in the Highlands are Mt Hagen and Goroka.
Accommodation In Mt Hagen the Highlander Hotel, Kimininga Lodge and Nu Waka Lodge are the top choices. Out of town, Rondon Ridge is the “ pinnacle of luxury ” at 2164m above sea level. If you’re staying in Goroka , you’ll find many lodges and guesthouses to accommodate the international showgoers. The Bird of Paradise Hotel is popular, as is the Pacific Gardens Hotel. Wabag also gets busy in August during the annual Enga Show, with the homey Wabag Lodge close to the showgrounds in town, or Kumul Lodge and Yaskom Resort overlooking iconic Lake Iave both located about an hours’ drive away. Further afield, the traditional-style Ambua Lodge is in the Doma Peaks near Tari , Hela Province, about 2130m above sea level. If you’re planning to hike PNG’s highest mountain Mt Wilhelm (4509m), which borders Chimbu, Jiwaka and Madang provinces, rustic Betty’s Lodge near the base is the perfect jumping off point.
