The Provinces
Of the 850 languages in PNG, 173 of them are spoken in Madang Province, making it the most culturally- varied province in the world. The picturesque town of Wewak is situated on the north coast of mainland Papua New Guinea. Wewak is your gateway to the mighty Sepik River that flows 1200km from the central spine of PNG to the Bismarck Sea. If you’re entering the country by land from Indonesia you will most likely find yourself in Vanimo, the border town to Irian Jaya (West Papua) . Vanimo is a quiet beach town and has an Indonesian Embassy to process visas for the border crossing. Lae is the industrial and manufacturing heart of Papua New Guinea. If you’re

College of Allied Health Science (a part of DWU), the affiliated Lutheran School of Nursing, PNG Maritime College, Institute of Medical Research (IMR), Madang Teachers College, St Fidelis Seminary and Modilon Teaching Hospital are other fine institutes. Madang town has an estimated population of more than 40,000, bolstered by a continued
stream of migrants from the Sepik and the Highlands, and is relatively well developed although schools and health services are failing to keep up with the population growth. The town continues to lobby hard for an international airport to bolster tourism. The remainder of the province is estimated at 450,000 people and is still developing. The road network connects Madang to
Bogia via the north coast road and Lae via the southeast road, which joins the Highlands Highway, providing access to Goroka, Kundiawa, Mt Hagen, Wabag and Mendi. Geographically, Madang has some of the highest mountain ranges, the largest valleys, coastal strips, volcanic islands and atolls – most of which are within the beautiful Madang Harbour.
