CHARACTER STRENGTHS A journey of growth and discovery

Every College boy is rich in character strengths and, starting this issue, College will celebrate a cross section of boys who demonstrate some of the attributes identified by the College community as worthy and desirable for the ideal College graduate.

Shun Miyake – Year 13 Richards House Perseverance

Rugby posts are not Shun Miyake’s only goals. The 17-year- old sets himself goals at the beginning of each year and while most are focused on rugby, academics also get a mention. This year Shun will play 1st five eight for the 1st XV, has his sights set on making the Crusaders U18 Knights team in July and hopefully the Schoolboys Barbarians. He has already attended a Japan U20 national team camp in Tokyo, but with the season approaching kick off, wants to focus on school rugby. Light fitness training has begun, but he’s keeping a good balance between training, studying and social life. There’s no doubt though that a rugby career is his objective. “One of my biggest goals is to be in the Crusaders, but the biggest of all is to be an All Black. I want to make my parents proud – they’ve done so much for me.” There is nothing Oscar doesn’t like about theatre. He’s been an actor, backstage hand, front of house manager, refreshments seller and now a director. Despite having a broken arm, Oscar was not going to allow being a Year 9 student stop him from being a part of last year’s Year 10 production Much Ado About Nothing , so he joined the backstage crew and learned all he could about props, sound and lighting. “It was great. You really learn what’s going on, and it makes you a better actor. It makes for a more holistic experience.” It also made him realise how much the crew does, but it doesn’t beat being on stage itself. He’s dedicated to acting and was in both Private Peaceful and the House play last year. Now he’s trying co-directing (and acting) for the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, “It’s another learning step in the theatre world for me.” Oscar Gosling – Year 10 Richards House Love of Learning
