She was 95 years old. This photograph was taken on her 91st birthday on the croquet lawn at her home, Annery House, Devon.

There are two sets, one in Christopher Alderson Calvert’s hand and the other which appears to be correspondence referred to by Alston in his letter of 3 December 1850.

CAAR CH290 2584 Box 840 Record number 37/6 Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Ka ¯ wanatanga 3 Christopher Alderson Calvert, Secretary to the Bishop Designate, described Thomas Jackson variously as a friend of Maria Somes, as the Minister of the Parish in which Mr Somes resided and as a person in whom Maria Somes had confidence after Joseph Somes died. The Rural sections were not numbered, but acquired their numbers as the choice was made. 8 Town Section 1 is on the corner of Norwich Quay and Canterbury Street. In the Deed of Conveyance it is noted that the hotel Canterbury Arms was on the site. This was correctly the Canterbury Hotel. On 7 March 1855 Thomas Jackson made an agreement with Richard Davis as proprietor. See Deeds Book 9 Folio 161 Christchurch Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Ka ¯ wanatanga Rural section 1 is described as “containing 50 acres or thereabouts statute measure commencing on the North Western Corner of the Town section numbered 120 on the Jackson Road Lyttelton thence proceeding in a Northerly direction along the Eastern edge of the said Road as distance of Eighteen Chains and twenty links thence at a right angle easterly a distance of Forty chains thence at a right angle southerly a distance of Twelve chains and twenty links thence at a right angle Westerly Eleven chains and thirty three links at the North Eastern corner of Town Section 176 and returning along the northern boundary of the Township of Lyttelton to the commencing point”. 4 The Prow http://www.theprow.org.nz/john-waring-saxton/ 5 Calvert, CA Memorandum CADA
