YU Stands with Israel

YU Responds to Crisis in Israel During these past weeks, we have witnessed the power of unity and resilience as reflected by our students, faculty, staff and adminis- tration through prayer, chessed and a range of university-led initiatives and events. • On Oct. 11, over 1,000 students, faculty and staff gathered at Lamport Auditorium to support Israel at YU’s “Stronger Together: Night of Unity.” Fox 5 News, CBS, NBC, ABC 7, PIX11 and NY1 covered the event. • Since Oct. 11, YU has presented a range of online and in-person programs with noted University historians, psychologists and outside experts, providing insight on the crisis. Weekly programming is ongoing. • 75 for 75, a global learning and mitzvah initiative, which ran from Oct. 19 to Oct. 22, united Jews across the globe for 75 hours of Torah learning in support of Israel. • On Oct. 22, YU students initiated a “Global Day of Loving-Kindness” to inspire one million acts of kindness, with participants sharing their good deeds online. • On Nov. 6, to honor the shloshim of those who died in the Oct. 7 massacre, a special mincha, tehillim and shira service was held at Lamport Auditorium. Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman Leads Israel Support Initiative with US University Presidents President Berman has brought together a broad coalition of higher education leaders to issue a statement supporting Israel and condemning Hamas terrorism. Published Oct. 29 in the Wall St. Journal , “We Stand with Israel Against Hamas” has been signed by more than 100 college and university presidents across the U.S. President Berman stated that “the signatories are committed to bringing clarity and truth to theses tumultuous times and to protecting our campus communities from violence and hate.” Among the founding members of the coalition are the University of Notre Dame, Brandeis University, The City University of New York, the State University of New York, the University of Massachusetts, Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, and the United Negro College Fund. In the Heights with the YU Innovation Lab The YU Innovation Lab joined forces with community, cultural and business leaders in Washington Heights for two dynamic programs. On Sept. 30, Thom Kennon, the Lab’s consulting director, and Adrian Miranda, the recently appointed community liaison director, led an interactive workshop titled “ChatGPT: What’s in it for Me?” exploring the practical use of generative AI tools. On Oct. 26, the Lab held its marquee net- working event, “Hive in the Heights.” More than 50 entrepreneurs and business owners engaged with the Lab’s consulting team for pro bono advice on business essentials, from marketing strategies to financial planning.

YU in the Media

A roundup of notable YU faculty and students featured across the media, including inter- views with President Berman on YU’s “Together with Israel” initiatives. PRESIDENT BERMAN On Oct. 19, Fox News’ early morning show “Fox & Friends” came to the Wilf Campus to broadcast its three-hour show live. Host Lawrence Jones spoke with a panel of Jewish Americans, including YU student Elishama Marmon ’24YC, on the effects of antisemitic rhetoric on college campuses and the impact of the war in Israel on New York’s Jewish community. The program ended on a moving note, with President Berman discussing his efforts to unite college and university presidents across the U.S. in support of Israel. President Berman also has appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” MSNBC’s “Ana Cabrera Reports,” CBS News, Fox Business and Fox 5 News .

YU FACULTY AND STUDENTS • Dr. S. Abraham Ravid , chair of Sy Syms’ finance dept., profiled in the Jewish Standard on his service in the IDF during Yom Kippur War. (Sept. 21) • Dr. Richard Zweig , psychology professor at Ferkauf, talked to Newsday about senior citizens and the use of pet robotics to combat loneliness. (Sept. 22) • Dr. Stephen Glicksman , director of YU’s Makor program, featured in WalletHub on the “Best & Worst Cities for People with Disabilities.” (Sept. 27) • Members of YU’s men’s basketball team and soccer team discussed the personal impact of the Israel-Hamas war on ESPN.com (Oct. 24) and in the New York Times (Oct. 17), respectively. • “We Stand with Israel Against Hamas,” the statement issued by the YU-led coalition of Universities Against Terrorism and signed by more than 100 U.S. university and college presidents, appeared in the Wall Street Journal (Oct. 29).

YU Launches Real Estate Day On Oct. 26, the Sy Syms School of Business and the University’s Office of Alumni Affairs co-hosted YU Real Estate Day and the Israel Advocacy Luncheon. With over 220 industry insiders in attendance, the full-day, career- advancing conference provided valuable insights into a rapidly evolving field. The sold-out event featured two dozen “Titans of Real Estate” in a series of lively panels discussions, which covered six real-estate sectors. In light of the ongoing conflict in Israel, discussions also delved into the role business leaders in the U.S. and Israel should play at this time of crisis, a topic explored in full at the conference’s Israel Advocacy Luncheon.

Sacks-Herenstein Center Announces Two Graduate Fellowship Cohorts YU extends a warm welcome to the distinguished members of the 2023–2024 cohort of Sacks Research Scholars and Sacks Impact Scholars. Each fellowship provides a unique opportunity for graduate students from across YU’s diverse graduate and professional schools to strengthen their leadership skills and deepen their expertise in their respective fields. The Sacks Research Scholars Fellowship is comprised of graduate students from Azrieli, GPATS, Revel, and RIETS. The Sacks Impact Scholars Fellowship brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary group of students from Cardozo Law, Ferkauf School of Psychology, the Fish Center, the Katz School of Science and Health, Sy Syms School of Business and Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Sy Syms Students Win First Place in TAMID Global Case Competition TAMID, a global non-profit, operates on 57 university campuses worldwide with a singular mission: to foster enduring professional connections between students and the Israeli business community. Each year, TAMID chapters send their top teams to compete in the global Case Competition. This year, YU’s team secured victory for the second time in three years, thanks to these standout Sy Syms students:

Record Turnout at Finance and Accounting Fair From KPMG to UBS, the region’s premier financial and accounting firms turned out in full force at this year’s Finance and Accounting Fair, organized by the Shevet Glaubach Center. More than 215 students seized the opportunity to explore full-time and internship opportunities with representatives from 24 companies, making this year’s event one of the most diverse and well-attended in recent history.

Dean Karen Bacon to Assume New Academic Leadership Role Dr. Karen Bacon , the Mordecai D. Katz and Dr. Monique C. Katz Dean of the Under- graduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yeshiva University, has been named associate vice president for academic affairs. In her new position, she will work closely with YU’s provost and deans to further advance academic affairs and enhance student life. Dr. Bacon, will transition into her new role once a successor is identified through a national search. READ MORE

Dr. Marian Gidea Secures $300,000 NSF Grant for Innovative Research

Dr. Marian Gidea , the associate dean for STEM Education and Research and director of the Graduate Program in Mathematical Sciences at the Katz School of Science and Health, has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support his groundbreaking research on energy harvesting devices. His findings, recently presented at the International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Tokyo, potentially address a range of contemporary scientific and techno- logical issues, such as production of sustainable energy and space exploration. Cardozo Professor Elected Member of American Law Institute

Alex Reinert , the Max Freund Professor of Litigation and Advocacy and Director of the Center for Rights and Justice at Cardozo, has been elected a member of the prestigious American Law Institute (ALI), which works to clarify and modernize United States common law and its adaptation to changing social needs. Notably, other distinguished Cardozo faculty members who have received this distinction include Dean Melanie Leslie and professors Myriam Gilles, Malvina Halberstam, Anthony Sebok, Andrea Kupfer Schneider, Paul Shupack and Stewart Sterk. Wurzweiler Professor Joins GSA Public Policy Advisory Council Dr. Mary Beth Morrissey , associate professor and director of the Ph.D. program at Wurzweiler School of Social Work, has been appointed to the Public Policy Advisory Council of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) for a three-year term beginning January 2024. The GSA is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education and practice in the field of aging.

Prominent YU Historian Authors Biography of Iconic Sportscaster

Dr. Jeffrey S. Gurock , the Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History and former chair of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society, has recently published Marty Glickman: The Life of an American Jewish Sports Legend, the first-ever biography of the iconic sportscaster who for nearly half a century was the voice of New York sports. With 25 books to his credit as an author or editor, Dr. Gurock received the Everett Family Founda- tion Award in 2012 for Jews in Gotham , which was also named Jewish Book of the Year by the Jewish Book Council.
