Are You Aware of the New Service Providers? THE RETURN OF STUDENT LOAN PAYMENTS

In September 2023, the pause on student loads ended after nearly four years. Starting last month, borrowers began making payments on their debt and will continue to make monthly payments. Because it’s been a while since you or your adult child or grandchildren opened your student loan account, it’s time for a refresher on what you need to know. The USDE is using new loan service providers. Last year, you may recall receiving an email from the U.S. Department of Education notifying you that payments will resume and that you must send your payments to a new servicer. You could be making payments to one of the six loan service providers: Edfinancial, MOHELA, Aidvantage, Nelnet, ECSI, and Default Resolution Group. Please visit StudentAid.gov, log in using your parent username and password, visit your account dashboard, and scroll down to the “My Loan Servicers” section to learn more about where you or your child need to make their payments. You can also call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243. Who do you contact for loan information? If you’re unsure how much you need to pay each month, have questions about how much you owe, time frames, and loan disbursements, your

loan service provider will typically send an email informing you of the payment deadline and the minimum amount you need to pay. However, your child (or you, if this is for your student loans) can contact the university you or your child attended for more loan information. What happens if you never pay your student loans? Refusing to repay your loans or being delinquent in making payments could result in a civil lawsuit in which the lender or creditor can sue borrowers to collect the money owed. But that’s not all — this default will be reported to credit bureaus, meaning your credit score will drop. This will make it hard to borrow money, receive a credit card, or take out future loans. Are there payment assistance programs? You can apply for the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, which will calculate your monthly payment based on your income and family size. To apply, please visit StudentAid.gov/IDR . If there is anything we can do for you during this time, like establishing a budget or helping you schedule a payment plan that will fit your needs, please contact us today!
