A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER
KEY SCHOOL DATES
It was wonderful to hear our Year 10 French students’ experiences in Paris when they returned to school on Tuesday. Their four days in the French capital were absolutely jam packed with trips to many famous sites including Montmatre, the Eiffel Tower and the Musee D’Orsay. The students walked miles around the

beautiful city, working up an appetite for some tasty crepes. On Wednesday Mrs Porteous and Ms Rook took a group of students to Kensington Palace as part of a project to develop students’ cultural capital and oracy skills. The students gained a real insight into the history of the Palace and enjoyed meeting actors who brought this to life alongside the curators. As part of the International Women in Engineering campaign Mr Godfrey took a group of Year 8 students to the Science Museum. In addition to a guided tour of the engineers gallery the students attended a speed mentoring event to meet women working in engineering to find out more about their career paths. Huge congratulations to our newly trained Anti-bullying Ambassadors who had a day of training at Hewen College as part of the prestigious Diana Award. Ms Moore was incredibly proud of all the students involved and is looking forward to working with them to support other students across the school. As we break up for half-term I want to wish all the Waldegrave community a restful and restorative break. I know that many of our students have been working extremely hard preparing for exams, supported by their families and it is important that everyone is able to take some time to enjoy the summer sunshine and relax.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
This week is Safeguarding Awareness Week. Attached is a poster for parents explaining the key definitions of safeguarding concerns . However, for secondary age students, there are further contextual factors that might affect them. These include risks among their peer group, in the community, and online. Locally, we know that as the weather warms up, young people often engage in risky behaviour around the river, especially at Teddington Lock, and in large gatherings (sometimes called ‘motives’) in local parks where underage drinking and substance misuse can be a concern. The Police Safer Schools Team have written to parents about the dangers of open water and the Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership have a range of resources on talking to your children about alcohol and other substances which are available here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8
What a half term it has been! I have been so impressed by the hard work of the Year 8s so far this Summer. Many students have enjoyed being outside and making the most of the sunshine. This week has been particularly busy for a number of Year 8s. On Monday I joined the frisbee club with Mr Reynolds and Mr Trevelyan. It was great to see students there enjoying a new sport. The students were practising throwing, catching and movement. I was incredibly impressed by the students’ effort and skill; we could have some national champions soon! Well done to all those who participated and a big thank you to Mr Reynolds. We also had some students attend the Year 8 International Women in Engineering Day event this week. Led by Mr. Godfrey, the event was a great success. Mr. Godfrey reported that the students behaved brilliantly, engaging with and showing curiosity about the information presented. He was very proud of how well the students represented the school. A big congratulations to 8PWA for securing first place in the weekly quiz competition. Every Thursday, our Year 8s battle it out in form time quizzes, and this week, 8PWA came out on top. Well done! Well done also to our epraise leaders this week. Our top three forms are 8EFR, 8FCO, and 8EMU with 211, 102, and 100 points respectively. Keep up the excellent work! A reminder that all students with Chromebooks should bring them in each day. The use of Chromebooks is a fundamental part of many lessons, enhancing our students’ learning experience and enabling interactive and engaging lessons. We have had a few students repeatedly forget their Chromebooks, which causes significant disruptions not only to the hub team but also to learning. Please ensure your child brings their Chromebook daily to avoid any disruptions. Please remind your child to charge their Chromebook every evening. I hope all Year 8s and their families enjoy the half term break. It is a great opportunity to get some rest, recharge and prepare for the final half term before our Year 8s become Year 9s. They are growing up very quickly!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Raven Winter by Susanna Bailey
I really enjoyed reading this book it’s really interesting and I learnt a lot more about what to do in certain situations. It is really quite emotional but an amazing read. I love how descriptive she is. If you enjoy this book you may also like another one of Susanna’s books, Snow foal.
