Plan today for peace of mind tomorrow. NOVEMBER 2023

Throughout our lives, we meet many people who influence us directly and indirectly. Those who influence us directly usually offer words of encouragement and support to reach a certain goal or put us in the best position possible for the future. The indirect influences have an incredible power to inspire us through their actions. Since November is National Inspirational Role Models Month, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge someone who helped shape me into the attorney and person I am today, both directly and indirectly. MY UNCLE’S INFLUENCE A Guiding Light in My Legal Journey

Growing up, I always had the feeling that my Uncle Carl was an exceptional individual. He gave me my first glimpse into the legal world and showed me what it was like to be an attorney. He served as the executive director for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, a nonprofit organization that provided free legal services to those in need. He implemented and oversaw programs designed to help victims of domestic violence, veterans, those suffering from AIDS when it was a more significant societal concern, and many other initiatives. I remember hearing jokes and stereotypes about attorneys being money-hungry or ambulance chasers and not really understanding where the joke came from.

“I couldn’t be more appreciative of everything my uncle has done for me. To this day, I still try to emulate him.”

My uncle has been an incredible source of support, encouragement, and inspiration. He’s now 85 years

My uncle was my main image of an attorney; all he ever did was help those in need. This created the foundation in my mind for what an attorney should be. As I grew up and learned more about law, I realized how much good attorneys could do in society. I made it my goal to follow in my uncle’s footsteps and help those in need. As I pursued a career in law, my uncle was always there by my side, providing guidance whenever needed. His advice helped me with my law school admissions essays and the LSAT. When I first started law school, he told me that each day would feel like it took years, but when it’s all said and done, you’ll feel like law school was over in the blink of an eye. He was right. He helped me earn a scholarship to help pay for school, and I even interned at one of his domestic violence clinics while in law school.

old and greatly enjoying retirement. Uncle Carl still provides support for me whenever needed, and I couldn’t be more appreciative of everything he has done for me. To this day, I still try to emulate him.

I believe that it’s vital for everyone to have a positive role model in their lives, just as my Uncle Carl was for me. It’s quite impactful and can bring many positives to your life. There’s no telling where I would be right now without my uncle’s support and guidance!

children, ensure their financial security, and decide how assets will be distributed to them in the event of your passing.

Estate planning ensures your assets and wishes are protected and carried out as you intend. However, a common mistake people make is creating an estate plan and then neglecting to update it after significant life events, resulting in unintended consequences, unnecessary complications, and potential conflicts among your loved ones. Here’s why it’s crucial to revisit and update your estate plan after major life events. Marriage or Divorce Getting married is a joyous occasion, but it also brings significant legal and financial changes. Your spouse may automatically have certain rights to your estate, but you may want to make more specific provisions in your estate plan. Conversely, divorce necessitates changes to beneficiaries, executors, and any roles your ex-spouse may have had in your plan. Birth or Adoption of Children The birth or adoption of children is one of the most compelling reasons to revisit your estate plan. You’ll want to name legal guardians for your minor LIFE CHANGES — SO SHOULD YOUR ESTATE PLAN

Death of a Spouse or Beneficiary The loss of a spouse or a beneficiary named in your estate plan requires immediate attention. Update your plan to reflect this change, including naming new beneficiaries or revising the distribution of assets. Change in Financial Situation Significant changes in your financial situation, such as inheriting a large sum, starting a business, or retiring, can affect your estate plan. It’s vital to evaluate and adjust your plan to account for these changes, including reviewing tax implications and ensuring your assets are managed in accordance with your current goals. Changes in Health If you experience changes in health, either through illness or injury, it’s essential to update your health care directives and power of attorney documents. These documents empower someone to make medical and financial decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated. Major life events demand periodic reviews and updates to ensure that your intentions are carried out and your loved ones are protected. Ignoring these critical changes can result in unintended consequences and unnecessary complications. To ensure accuracy, make it a priority to revisit your plan after major life events. By doing so, you can be confident that your estate plan continues to serve as a reliable blueprint for the future.

Thanksgiving With the Shoups

Ingredients

2 9-inch unbaked pie crusts

6 cups thinly sliced peeled apples

Over the years, Thanksgiving has become one of my favorite days of the year. It’s a day we can spend time with our loved ones, enjoy an amazing meal, and reflect on all of the good things in our lives. I can’t wait to celebrate the occasion at my parents’ house. It’s always a good time when we can get everyone together, and I know this celebration will be no different!

1 tsp cinnamon

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 tbsp butter

1. Preheat oven to 425 F. 2. Place 1 pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate.

David and I usually head to my parents’ house the day before Thanksgiving to help them prepare. I help my mom get some of the dishes started so we can jump right into making them in the morning. That way, we don’t have to wake up early to start cooking, which makes the celebration more enjoyable for everyone involved. By mid-morning, my brother

3. In a large bowl, combine apples, cinnamon, sugar, and flour. 4. Spoon mixture into pastry-lined pie plate and dot with butter. 5. and sister-in-law arrive at the house with their kids and never hesitate to offer a helping hand. My nieces have really started to enjoy the cooking aspect of Thanksgiving, which reminds me of my younger days, helping out in the kitchen. When I was my niece’s age, I looked up to my grandma and aunts for their ability to make a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner. I wanted to learn how to make everything they did so I could take over one day. When I was about 16 or 17, I brought over some bright neon notecards and asked my aunt for directions for all of

her Thanksgiving recipes. I still use those notecards to make dishes every single year, and now, I’m sharing those same recipes with my niece! We spend the rest of our Thanksgiving celebration simply enjoying each other’s company. The

kids are outside playing, David and my dad are in the kitchen chatting or watching football, and the rest of us are performing a labor of love, ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable Thanksgiving! Then, on the following day, we have a big soccer game

between everyone in the family. It’s always a great time!

I hope you all can enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by your loved ones and enjoying some of your favorite holiday dishes! –Andrea Shoup

The Science Behind Why Dogs and Humans Can’t Resist Leaf Piles

Irresistible Seasonal Scents Our sense of smell doesn’t even come close to dogs’ incredible scent skills. While we have 5 million scent receptors, dogs have anywhere between 125–300 million! This means they can smell countless other scents we can’t, and autumn may bring some exciting aromas your dog hasn’t experienced in a while. The result? They’ll dive right into a leaf pile and get sniffing!

Whether it’s your boisterous toddler or rowdy pup, a perfect pile of autumn leaves might be too good to resist! You probably remember the days when you also jumped into a crunchy orange leaf pile without a second thought. But why do humans and dogs love jumping into huge piles of leaves?

The main (and most obvious answer) is because it’s fun! For kids, dogs, and even some adults, jumping and rolling around in the fall leaves is a satisfying

Marking Territory Another scent factor could be your dog wanting to claim a particular leaf pile. We already know dogs use their scents

form of play that releases energy. While this may be the simple reason for humans, there are a few more reasons your canine companion can’t resist a tower of leaves.

to mark territory, and rolling in a beloved pile of leaves is a way to infuse their scent. After diving head first into some leaves, they leave their scent behind so other animals can smell them and know that the leaf pile has already been claimed! Whatever the case, jumping into a pile of leaves is completely normal — and fun! — for both humans and dogs.

Instinct to Dig Digging is a dog’s favorite pastime that dates back to their wolf ancestors. Just as natural as sniffing and barking, digging is an ingrained behavior for dogs, and they want to follow their instincts the moment they see a leaf pile. Whether they’re digging in to rest in the cool leaves or demolishing the pile entirely, your dog is just doing what dogs have always done.
