Wellbeing at The Lakes
WELLBEING TEAM
SPORTS PROGRAM Throughout Term 1 and 2 some of our students participated in a weekly Sports Program run by Whittlesea Community Connections. This program was run for students from diverse backgrounds to encourage attendance and engagement in school. The group of 15 students learned about 4 different sports across the program ’ s duration. The group started off with 2 weeks of Soccer, followed by 2 weeks of AFL Football. All students represented The Lakes well by participating and engaging in each sport as well as listening to each coach respectfully. After Football, the group focused on Basketball for a fortnight and were lucky enough to be coached by a local ex - NBL star. To wrap up the program, the group completed 2 weeks of Netball, finishing up with a riveting game that left scores at 22 to 24. During this 8 - week program, students demonstrated The Lakes values of Teamwork and Respect to all coaches that came throughout their involvement in the program. At the end of the program, each student received a rebel gift card as a thank you for their participation. Students used these gift cards to purchase new sport equipment and clothing.
KOORI PROGRAM The Koori Program has run fortnightly this year with a focus on connecting and supporting our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across both campuses. At the start of each Term, the Secondary students came together to plan what they would like to run with the Primary students and then get to action those ideas. In the first semester, the group focused on educating the students about traditional games such as ‘ marn - grook ’ and understanding the history of each activity. As we moved into Term 4, the Koori Program had an exciting new project in the works. The group decided to design a sports uniform that not only reflects their school spirit but also holds strong links to their rich cultural heritage. This uniform will serve as a visual representation of unity and pride for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students within our school community. To bring this vision to life, the group will embark on a journey of research, seeking inspiration from traditional art forms, patterns, and symbols that hold significant meaning in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They will collaborate closely with local artists and elders to ensure that the design respects and honours their heritage, while also embodying the values of sportsmanship and teamwork.
