Inspiration for Future Thinkers

YEAR EIGHT

ERIC AGYEMAN, YOUTH MENTOR During Term 1, the Year 8 cohort hosted Eric Agyeman, a youth mentor and motivational speaker, who visited our Year 8 students in a life - changing incursion. Eric's journey from a troubled past to a beacon of hope and resilience left a lasting impact on our young minds. Eric's personal experiences make his message even more compelling. As a victim of racial bullying during his Primary school years, Eric understands the pain and isolation that bullying can inflict. Being the only African student in his school, he faced constant teasing, isolation, and fear. Eric's journey is a testament to the power of resilience. He overcame mental health challenges, battled suicidal thoughts, and emerged from the shadows of a teen gang to become an inspiring figure for young people everywhere. His life story is proof that, regardless of our backgrounds, the mistakes we make, or the challenges we face, we can still rise and make our lives count. During Eric's incursion, our Year 8 students had the opportunity to not only hear his story but also engage in meaningful discussions about bullying, kindness, and the importance of supporting one another. It was a transformative experience that left a deep impression on our students, encouraging them to cultivate resilience and empathy.

MELBOURNE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM As part of their Term 2 English unit, on exploring the Holocaust, our students embarked on a poignant journey to the recently renovated Melbourne Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick. This visit was a pivotal moment in their education, allowing them to delve deep into the history of one of the most significant and tragic events of the 20th century. Our students had the opportunity to tour the museum's permanent exhibition, which eloquently tells the story of the Holocaust through an impressive collection of artifacts and moving testimonies. Walking through the museum, they encountered a vast array of documents, photographs, and personal artifacts that vividly brought to life the experiences of those who suffered during this dark period in history. One of the most profound moments of the excursion was when our students had the privilege of hearing from a Holocaust survivor. This firsthand account of the horrors of the Holocaust provided a unique and unforgettable perspective that no textbook could ever convey. The survivor's story served as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the memory of the Holocaust and the necessity of standing up against discrimination and hatred in all its forms. The Year 8 excursion to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum was a transformative experience for our students. It reinforced the values of empathy and understanding that we hold dear at our school. We are confident that this experience will have a lasting impact on our students and help shape them into compassionate and informed citizens of the world.
