Having a high share of in-state vendors fulfill federal contracts is crucial because it boosts the local economy by creating jobs and retaining revenue within the state, thereby fostering regional economic growth and stability. Additionally, it strengthens the state’s aerospace industry by ensuring that local businesses benefit from federal investments, enhancing their capabilities and competitiveness. For the 10-county Greater Oklahoma City region, 65% ($2.71 billion) of total contracts valued at $4.18 billion were aerospace related. Approximately 72% of the aerospace contracts issued in the 10-county region are traced to vendors with an operating address in Oklahoma. For Oklahoma County, approximately 69% of the total value of procurement in the county in fiscal year 2024 was aerospace-related. Seventy-two percent of the aerospace-related The findings suggest that the share of total state and region contracting by aerospace-related agencies increased sharply between fiscal years 2019 and 2024, rising by 5-10 percentage points across the three regions in Figure 22. However, the share of aerospace related contracting performed by Oklahoma-based vendors declined slightly by 3-5 percentage points across the three regions. This suggests that the large expansion in aerospace contracting that occurred between fiscal years 2019 and 2024 was only possible with a slight increase in the share that was performed by non-Oklahoma based vendors. The estimates reflect the distribution of a total of $2.71 billion in federal spending on goods and services by the Air Force, FAA, and NASA in the region. percentage points across the three regions. Aerospace-Related Federal Procurement in the 10-County Region In Oklahoma County, the city of Oklahoma City accounts for more than 82% ($2.46 billion) of total statewide aerospace- specific contracting and 92% of county- wide aerospace contracting. An additional $194 million is identified as performed at Tinker AFB. Less than $5 million is reported as performed in Edmond. Very little aerospace contracting is present in other cities within Oklahoma county. Although Oklahoma County dominates aerospace contracting activity within the 10-county region, several smaller yet significant pockets of activity are visible within the federal procurement data. Figure 23 details the distribution of Cleveland County is home to the second largest concentration of aerospace-specific activities among the remaining counties. Aerospace contracts awarded to firms in Norman totaled $24 million in fiscal year 2024. Although Oklahoma County dominates aerospace contracting activity within the 10-county region, several smaller yet significant pockets of activity are visible within the federal procurement data.
