Short Bursts of Reading Can Add Up! THE POWER OF READING 10–15 PAGES A DAY
While plenty of people might say I don’t read a lot, I think I read a fair amount! How much reading is the right amount isn’t the same for everyone. We all have different schedules, reading habits, and interests. I firmly believe the amount of reading that fulfills you is right for you. Since December is Read a New Book Month, I thought I’d share how I fit reading into my hectic routine and why it’s a staple in my daily life. For me, I read to either satisfy my curiosity or learn valuable information. I even read books from different genres every day! Currently, I’m reading George Orwell’s “1984.” Before you say
I read a book about my latest curiosity. I’m not plowing through these, I only read 10–15 pages from each book daily. While it’s not a formal routine, it has been part of my daily life for many years. I’ll sit by the fireplace and spend 30–45 minutes reading if it’s colder. When it’s time to get to bed, I’ll try to read for another 30 minutes, but most times, I fall asleep a few pages in! Of course, I read for fun, too, and it’s definitely science fiction or fantasy. My go-to recreational re-read is always something from “The Lord of the Rings” series. While I’ve only seen the movies a handful of times, I must’ve read the series at least three times completely through! I am not trying to say everyone needs to read 2–3 books a day. Reading is personal, and if reading one book at a time for just a few minutes a day is all you can fit in, then don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! It’s surprising how many books you read in a year if you squeeze in 10–20 minutes daily. I recommend you find the best time to read in your schedule and stick to it as much as possible. Even if it’s just a short time, your progress will always surpass what you would’ve read without a reading routine at all. –Darin Garman

the book has been talked about enough, I’d never read it. That’s right, after all these years, I’d never read the dystopian classic, and my curiosity about why everyone and their mother has read it led me to pick up the book. As for my informative read, I’m currently reading the new Elon Musk biography by Walter Isaacson. For those even partly interested in Musk, this book is a must-read! It’s as fascinating as it is informative, not just because of Musk’s unique life but also because of how a person can become the figure he is now. I’m always searching for books that can spark my curiosity, whether it’s about the author or a story or books that teach me something entirely new. No matter what, I’ll always have two books to read simultaneously, and sometimes even more. In the morning, I like to read a book that teaches me something new, and then right before bed,

HOW TO SHIELD YOUR INVESTMENTS FROM EXTERNAL EVENTS
We are finally knee-deep into football season. As you know from my emails, it is my son Isaiah’s last year and my and Gina’s final year of kids activities. We have been doing this with all our kids for over 25 years. Isaiah’s game on Saturday reminded me of the upcoming discounted real estate properties we will see in 2023 and big time in 2024. Investors will either get involved, decide to play the game and get in the huddle, or choose to watch from the sidelines. Which will you be as these projects become available? Will it ONLY be the rich or the well-connected who have the first shot at acquiring these properties? I have been around a long time and know this will be the case. I have seen this before. 5 MULTIFAMILY PILLARS Over the next few issues of the newsletter in 2024, I think it is crucial to cover the main Pillars of Multifamily Investing and Ownership that you need to use for your multifamily ownership and investing.
With that in mind, let’s start with Pillar No. 1 this month — Insulation! One of the surprising things most investors do NOT consider is whether or not the investment they plan on getting involved in, whether active or passive, is insulated from the following:
Knowing this, we as investors need to choose an investment that is mostly immune to these events or, at least, have SOME of our money parked in these investments primarily immune to these events. We could come up with a list of such investments, of course. Not surprisingly, multifamily is part of this list. People still need a place to live no matter what happens with China, Ukraine, or a refinery shutting down somewhere. People still need to live, and they need shelter. This is one of the reasons many get involved with me here in the Heartland, owning multifamily. It “buys” them better protection than many other conventional investments. Stay tuned for the other four pillars in upcoming issues. For more information on being involved as a member of our Heartland Investment Family, simply go to DarinGarman.com , and I will have our latest offerings sent over to you — always with zero obligation.

If you wonder what I am talking about, take your favorite stock as an example. Many times, the ups and downs of that stock are NOT related to how well the company is doing. A decrease in share price is often based on something outside of the stock, such as a refinery having to shut down during a flood or a fire. Or the ongoing war with Russia and Ukraine, how well that goes, or any military exercises China decides to engage in. I get tired of hearing about news happening everywhere that has nothing to do with my stocks. But my stock value is subject to plummeting because of what I call unrelated investment events like these.

Page 4 How Ketchup Transformed From Cure to Condiment
From Miracle Cure to Tasty Delight
THE UNBELIEVABLE HISTORY OF KETCHUP
Ketchup, the popular tasty and tangy condiment found on tables and in refrigerators worldwide, has a surprising and somewhat peculiar history. In the 1830s, it was not just a topping for hamburgers and hot dogs; it was actually sold as medicine — yes, medicine! A UNIQUE ORIGIN Ketchup’s roots can be traced back to Asia, where it was called ke- tsiap (Xiamen), a sauce made from fermented fish sauce. It made its way to Europe in the 17th century, but it looked and tasted different from the ketchup we know today, as it included ingredients like mushrooms, walnuts, and oysters — no tomatoes.
about their edibility and safety. In fact, some believed tomatoes were poisonous, but Dr. Bennett aimed to market them as a safe and healthy miracle ingredient. His tomato preparation was a precursor to modern ketchup. THE TRANSITION TO THE TABLE Over time, the medicinal claims surrounding tomato-based ketchup faded, and people began enjoying its taste. A tomato- based ketchup started to appear in cookbooks as an ingredient in recipes and was commonly paired with eggs, meat, and fish. By the late 19th century, ketchup had become a staple in American households, and companies like Heinz began mass-producing it. Today, it’s tough to imagine ketchup as anything other than a delicious topping for our favorite foods, and while tomatoes do contain antioxidants and vitamin C, we know ketchup won’t cure a sickness. However, its transformation from fish sauce to tomato medicine to a beloved topping is a remarkable twist in culinary history!
THE MEDICINAL CLAIM AND TOMATO CONNECTION In the 1830s, an Ohio physician named Dr. John Cook Bennett began marketing a tomato-based concoction as a medicinal elixir. Dr. Bennett claimed his tomato extract had incredible healing properties and promoted it as a cure for a wide range of ailments, including diarrhea, indigestion, jaundice, and rheumatism.
During this time, tomatoes were still relatively new in American cuisine, and many people were skeptical
