KEY SCHOOL DATES

It was wonderful to hear our Year 10 French students’ experiences in Paris when they returned to school on Tuesday. Their four days in the French capital were absolutely jam packed with trips to many famous sites including Montmatre, the Eiffel Tower and the Musee D’Orsay. The students walked miles around the

beautiful city, working up an appetite for some tasty crepes. On Wednesday Mrs Porteous and Ms Rook took a group of students to Kensington Palace as part of a project to develop students’ cultural capital and oracy skills. The students gained a real insight into the history of the Palace and enjoyed meeting actors who brought this to life alongside the curators. As part of the International Women in Engineering campaign Mr Godfrey took a group of Year 8 students to the Science Museum. In addition to a guided tour of the engineers gallery the students attended a speed mentoring event to meet women working in engineering to find out more about their career paths. Huge congratulations to our newly trained Anti-bullying Ambassadors who had a day of training at Hewen College as part of the prestigious Diana Award. Ms Moore was incredibly proud of all the students involved and is looking forward to working with them to support other students across the school. As we break up for half-term I want to wish all the Waldegrave community a restful and restorative break. I know that many of our students have been working extremely hard preparing for exams, supported by their families and it is important that everyone is able to take some time to enjoy the summer sunshine and relax.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This week is Safeguarding Awareness Week. Attached is a poster for parents explaining the key definitions of safeguarding concerns . However, for secondary age students, there are further contextual factors that might affect them. These include risks among their peer group, in the community, and online. Locally, we know that as the weather warms up, young people often engage in risky behaviour around the river, especially at Teddington Lock, and in large gatherings (sometimes called ‘motives’) in local parks where underage drinking and substance misuse can be a concern. The Police Safer Schools Team have written to parents about the dangers of open water and the Kingston and Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership have a range of resources on talking to your children about alcohol and other substances which are available here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

It has been a very busy week with lots of trips and activities for Year 10. Our Year 10 French students returned from Paris on Monday afternoon, having enjoyed a fantastic trip filled with cultural and language experiences. On Wednesday, a small group of Year 10 students visited Kensington Palace as part of a cultural speaking workshop. This unique experience allowed them to get up close and personal with the exhibits and gain valuable insights into life at the palace hundreds of years ago. Yesterday, we bid farewell to our German speakers who are off to visit the town of Boppard. They will be soaking up the local sights and sounds, and we look forward to hearing about their adventures. Our Year 9 and 10 cricketers competed in the U15 Middlesex Cricket Competition at Barn Elms on Tuesday. Representing our school were Aditi S, Aditi A, Connie S, and Elodie W. They played with great enthusiasm and skill. Furthermore, we had a catch-up session for HPV vaccinations, ensuring our students stay up to date with their health requirements. The Student Parliament Curriculum Committee Meeting also took place this week, where students tackled issues they feel passionate about. Congratulations to Uma in 10EAH who has been chosen as one of the Grand Finalists in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. Out of 40,000 students who participated in the workshops, only 15 students from across London and Essex have been selected for the final. Uma will be performing her speech at the Cambridge Theatre in the West End in July. What a fantastic achievement! Well done to Amy in 10FHE for achieving a Merit in her recent Grade 4 Piano exam! After half term we have a number of important activities for Year 10: Work Experience takes place at the start of July, so I’d like to remind everyone to ensure they get all of the work experience paperwork in and ready for this. Year 10 exams start the week of Monday 10 June. Exam schedules have been posted on all the Google Classrooms to help you keep track. Students can use the half term break to ensure they are fully prepared. Whilst revision is important it is also important that students find time to enjoy some relaxation.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Turtles all the way down by John Green. Turtles all the way down follows the 16 year old character Aza Holmes as she struggles with OCD and anxiety. However, she embarks on a journey to find out the mysterious absence of her ex million best friend’s father, despite the dangers involved within this. I found this book really intriguing as it gives you a first hand perspective on the experiences that people struggling and persevering with mental illnesses face. It also delves into the strong connections of friendships and how they shape you to be the person you are today. ~ Recommended by Yasemin A, 11ERU
