PPC Unites The Industry At Fall Meeting In Vancouver BY PAPERBOARD PACKAGING COUNCIL
Bloomberg Gives Outlook On Holidays For Box Makers A recent survey conducted by Bloomberg Intelligence revealed that an extended slow- down in sales of cardboard boxes is intensify- ing concern that this holiday season will be a disappointing one for U.S. retailers. U.S. corrugated box shipments fell to the lowest third-quarter reading since 2015, main- taining the more measured pace seen in the previous quarter, according to the Fibre Box Association. Packaging companies in recent weeks have warned that economic uncertain- ty is weighing on retailers and consumers. Box plants surveyed by Bloomberg Intelli- gence said orders were flat or below normal in October, while U.S. consumer sentiment fell to a five-month low and manufacturing activity dropped for an eighth straight month. “We’re not getting a lot of lift, obviously, from the economy,” Packaging Corp of Amer- ica President Thomas Hassfurther said last month. “And these starts and stops that we’ve seen consistently go on throughout the year relative to tariffs and a bunch of other things certainly are impacting the business.” Smurfit Westrock Plc reported an 8.7 per- cent drop in North America same-day box
Vancouver greeted the PPC community with a spirit that was fitting for this moment in time, one defined by collaboration, continuity, and the collective strength of an industry that succeeds when it moves forward together. With the rising economic complexity and technology reshaping en- tire business models, the 2025 Fall Meeting & Leadership Conference became more than just a gathering. It became a statement of unity, an affirmation that PPC members thrive because they lead, adapt, and face change as a community.
The PPC Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
The event began with remarks from PPC Board Chair Hilda Murray, stepping onto the stage for the first time in her new role. With both clar- ity and conviction, she acknowledged the significance of this year, one in which leadership is transitioning not just at PPC, but across many member companies, as they navigate generational succession. Her message was steady and straightforward: “We succeed when we move forward together.” Beside her stood PPC’s VP & Executive Director Emily Leonczyk, whose leadership continues to redefine PPC through modernization, member-driven programming, and a reinvigorated strategic direction. Emily spoke candidly about the work ahead: strengthening PPC’s ad- vocacy voice and ensuring that PPC remains “the table where folding carton leaders solve problems together. PPC President Ben Markens offered his signature blend of prag- matism and perspective, reminding the room that unity within PPC has always been rooted in shared values, education, stewardship, and the CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Cascades Reports Production Increase At Bear Island Mill
Play it Safe
Kingsey Falls, Quebec-based paper packaging company Cascades Inc. has reported its third-quarter 2025 earn- ings, and provided an update on its Bear Island recycled containerboard mill in Ashland, Virginia. The mill officially started up in May 2023 and has con- tinued to ramp up production capacity. At the time of the startup, Cascades said the site was expected to have an annual production capacity of 465,000 tons of lightweight, recycled containerboard. In the third quarter of this year, the company reports that production at the mill increased 24 percent to just over 102,000 tons. “We have continued to see this positive operational pace in October, and we are forecasting a strong end of 2025,” Cascades President and CEO Hugues Simon said. “If you look at the last six months, we saw consistent improvement from an operating rate standpoint or operat- ing efficiencies,” he said of Bear Island. During the quarter, Cascades also closed a container- board mill in Niagara Falls, New York—a move originally announced in July—with that tonnage being redistributed among the company’s existing mill network “Despite the ongoing uncertainty in the current eco- nomic environment, we are making good progress across many of these initiatives,” Simon said.

New Industry Analysis Examines Source Reduction In Packaging A new industry analysis released this month by Amerip- en, the Consumer Brands Association and the Consumer Technology Association, revealed that many brand own- ers and packaging converters believe only 5-10 percent additional source reduction is achievable over the next five years. The findings, compiled by Smithers and based on surveys of dozens of companies, offer a clear-eyed as- sessment of how far material reduction efforts can realisti- cally go, and where the constraints lie. But there are concerns going forward about what’s possible, given overall volume growth and the need to en- sure that packaging remains sufficiently protective. The reality check comes as jurisdictions like California
are calling for a 25 percent reduction in single-use plastic packaging by 2032 as part of its extended producer law, SB 54. The report defines source reduction as the physical reduction of packaging weight for a product with the same usage. That’s different from simply swapping out virgin materials for recycled content, for example. Businesses have already made notable progress, the report asserts, in pursuit of sustainability benefits and low- er material costs. Ameripen, CBA and CTA credited indus- try-led source reduction efforts with decreasing U.S. pack- aging volume by approximately 5 million metric tons from 2019 to 2024, even amid growing packaging demand from e-commerce. The majority of that progress has come from light- weighting, as well as secondary and protective packaging changes, respondents reported. Examples highlighted in the report include Coca-Cola’s
efforts to lightweight its plastic bottle portfo- lio, Amazon’s reduction of corrugated boxes in favor of flexible paper mailers and Unile- ver’s implementation of refillable packaging options. “This report shows that our industry has made great strides in source reduction ef- forts,” said John Hewitt, senior vice presi- dent of packaging and sustainability at the Consumer Brands Association. Challenges Ahead Brands see consumer preference as their largest driver of sustainability efforts, while packaging converters cited policy and regulation. But companies also have con- flicting trade-offs on their radar. Compostable packaging is one example: It can reduce the amount food packaging going to landfills, the report says, but com- postable materials may be thicker than tra- ditional counterparts — which could directly conflict with source reduction. As another example: EPR policies are driving companies to further prioritize pack- aging recyclability. This may not necessarily be to the advantage of source reduction. “Brands may be restricted in their mate- rial choice, which may limit pathways to op- timize source reduction while maintaining recyclability based on today’s infrastructure and market access,” the report states. “At the same time, regulatory require- ments for recycled content are pushing brands to test the limits of packaging in- tegrity. In some cases, increased recycled content may also require the use of more or heavier virgin material to achieve packag- ing integrity. This becomes a direct conflict with source reduction goals, forcing poten- tial trade-offs,” the report explains.

PPC Tours Great Little Box Company, Reports ‘Little’ Doesn’t Do It Justice
There is nothing little about the Great Little Box Company (GLBC). From its expansive 250,000-square-foot operation to the big-hearted culture that fills every corner, this company lives up to its name in all the best ways, and then some.
• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology
During PPC’s 2025 Fall Meeting in Vancouver, members had the spe- cial opportunity to step inside one of Vancouver’s most admired opera- tions. With open arms, GLBC graciously welcomed more than 100 PPC members, including a group of exuberant university students whose cu- riosity and excitement were contagious. PPC Board Member Doree Quayle, Division President of Retail Pack- aging, took to the Fall Meeting stage the day before to outline the history of GLBC and share countless examples of their standout culture. It was almost hard to believe until we stepped into the plant and saw it first- hand.

ing $165,882. • Average base salary at corrugator plants was $109,084, with total compensation averaging $226,165. Compared to AICC’s previous report, base salaries have remained steady at sheet plants while increasing by approximately 21 percent at corrugator plants. Meanwhile, total compensation has declined slightly—by 11 percent at sheet plants and 6 percent at corrugator plants. All responses were collected and compiled by Industry Insights, Inc. (Dublin, OH) and held in strict confidence. AF&PA Releases October 2025 Packaging Papers Monthly Report The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released the October 2025 Packaging Papers Monthly report. Total packaging papers and specialty packaging shipments in October increased 9 percent compared to October 2024. They were up 1 percent when compared to the same 10 months of 2024. • The bleached operating rate increased to 80.8 percent, reaching its highest level over the last few years; ca- pacity was down 8 percent compared to last October. • Unbleached bag & sack shipments were up 8 percent from last October, but down 2.3 percent year to date. • Total inventories were nearly 12 percent from the same month last year.
AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has re- leased the 14th edition of the Sales Compensation Report. This comprehensive benchmarking resource provides the most current insight into salaries, incentives, and benefits being offered to sales professionals at independent cor- rugator plants and sheet plants across the United States. Based on survey data collected earlier this year from 45 independent corrugators and sheet plants, represent- ing 65 locations nationwide, the Report captures nearly $1.0 billion in corrugated product sales during 2024. The findings present a detailed view of compensation practic- es segmented by plant type, plant size, and region, giv- ing AICC members the data they need to make informed, competitive decisions. “Finding and keeping people remains a challenge for AICC members. As competition for top sales talent contin- ues to grow, understanding market compensation trends is critical,” said AICC President Mike D’Angelo. “This report offers members a real-life, data-driven foundation to en- sure their compensation strategies are fair, effective, and competitive.” As of January 1, 2025, the Report shows: • Average base salary for salespersons at U.S. sheet plants was $80,300, with total compensation averag-

Domtar Makes Its Largest Land Donation Yet To NCC
The Perfect Combo Get Peak Performance From Your Equipment with Matched Component Sets
Fort Mills, South Carolina based Domtar has made anoth- er donation of land to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) along Newfoundland’s Southwest Gander River and Gander Lake—the largest land donation the charity has re- ceived during its 54 years working in Atlantic Canada. The land donation project is significant as it enables better wildlife movement through connected conservation lands. Less than three per cent of the Central Newfound- land ecoregion currently falls under conservation status.
Nothing’s more rewarding than a couple made for each other.
The nearest established protected area is the Jona- than’s Pond Provincial Park Reserve. This project could link two potential future conservation areas: the province’s proposed Rodney Pond Wilderness Reserve, and the Charlie’s Place protected area proposed by Qalipu First Nation. The twin crises of rapid biodiversity loss and climate change demand we do more to protect nature, faster. NCC is accelerating conservation at an unprecedented pace and scale and is pleased to collaborate with forestry com- panies and other industries to support nature for people, wildlife and communities. The announcement came as NCC launched its largest private conservation securement, with a campaign to pro- tect more than 4,400 acres of boreal forest, freshwater shoreline and wetlands in central Newfoundland. Domtar’s donation allows NCC to conserve four large parcels of for- ested lands and waters to ease wildlife movement through connected conservation lands, including those yet to be designated in the future. “Boreal forests cover 60 percent of Canada’s land mass and absorb vast amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” says Piers Evans, NCC’s program director in Newfoundland and Labrador. “We are grateful to Domtar for the generous land donation.” In addition to partnering with Domtar, NCC has re- ceived project support from the federal government’s Natural Heritage Conservation Program, part of Canada’s Nature Fund. As these federal dollars require matching funds, NCC is encouraging area residents, local business- es and foundations to support the initiative with donations for the securement, long-term management and care of the lands.

Women-Owned Diamond Packaging Marks 114 Years In Operation Rochester, New York based Diamond Packaging, a WBENC-certified women-owned business and long-stand- ing innovator in folding carton design and sustainability, is celebrating 114 years in operation. Under the leadership of CEO and owner Karla Fichter, Diamond continues to build on a legacy defined by technical excellence, environmen- tal responsibility, and a strong commitment to diversity. Fichter, who leads one of the industry’s most recog- nized independent packaging manufacturers, says being a women-owned business is a point of pride—but not a request for spe- cial treatment. “Being classified as a woman-owned business doesn’t grant any exceptions, nor do I want any,” she said. “Our company still has to be a high performer in all ar- eas to compete in our industry, and we’re happy to work hard to set the benchmark so that Diamond can be a leader in the pack- aging world.” She emphasizes that Diamond’s culture is rooted in diversity, inclusion, and respect, values that strengthen both the workplace and the company’s long-term success. “We value and celebrate our collective experience, talent Karla Fichter
and self-expression,” she said. “These strengths lead to a stronger, richer and more rewarding work environment.” That commitment extends beyond Diamond’s walls. As a certified women’s business enterprise, the company actively seeks out partnerships with women- and minori- ty-owned businesses and has set a goal to increase its spend with diverse suppliers by ten percent per year for the next five years. “We look to partner with companies that are strong advocates for supplier diversity because it will expand opportunities and eliminate barriers in the marketplace for diverse business owners,” Fichter said. Looking ahead, Diamond plans to continue investing in new technology and innovation to deliver premium pack- aging solutions that enhance brand value. Advancing ESG initiatives remains a core priority as well, with environmen- tal stewardship, social responsibility, and strong gover- nance principles integrated throughout operations. The company’s recent achievements reflect that ded- ication. Diamond was named to USA TODAY’s America’s Climate Leaders 2025 list for year-over-year reductions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The company also received its third Platinum rating from EcoVadis, placing it among the top leaders in global sustainability assess- ments. After more than a century in business, Diamond Pack- aging remains focused on the principles that have shaped its success: innovation, responsibility, and a deep belief in the power of people.

a candid reminder that in uncer- tain times, leadership is less about strategy and more about presence. Drawing on real-world experienc- es, Frank illustrated how mean- ingful connections happen when leaders step out from behind their desks and engage face-to-face.
Eric Frank
Frank emphasized today’s environment, defined by what he called FUD: fear, uncertainty, and doubt, requires leaders to be intentional about the tone they set. Employ- ees don’t just hear words; they read posture, expression, and energy. A single reaction can unite a room or tear it apart. He urged leaders to avoid “energy vampires” who drain team momentum, and instead model steadiness, au- thenticity, and optimism. Few moments captured the theme of transition more clearly than the CEO keynote from Laurent Sellier of Smurfit Westrock North America, speaking in his first year at the helm of the newly merged global entity.
Sellier delivered the message the industry has been waiting for: clarity on how the combined com- pany intends to operate, invest, and lead. He explained that Smurf- it Westrock is positioning itself not as the largest packaging company in the world, but as the most resil-

ient, agile, and globally integrated. Sellier emphasized the necessity of global connectivity, responsible growth, and long-term investment, particular- ly at a time when customers expect both innovation and consistency. Environmental & Market Intelligence Rachel Kagan, Executive Director of the Paper & Paper- board Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC), brought a Canadian perspective to the room, one that continues to accelerate regulatory influence across North America. Her briefing highlighted the ongoing shifts in extended producer responsibility, recycled-content mandates, and the development of carbon-focused policies. Kagan emphasized that packaging policy is no longer evolving; it is accelerating, and she challenged companies

scape PPC is navigating on behalf of members. His up- date, grounded in fact rather than conjecture, highlighted state-level legislation, fed- eral regulatory momentum, and the areas where PPC is actively representing the in- terests of converters. Tom’s work reinforced
of the day. With wit, honesty, and sharp industry insight, Turner explained the political and regulatory climates shaping Europe’s folding carton markets. He pointed to both opportunity and caution: the continued expan- sion of fiber-based packaging de- mand, balanced against increas- ingly restrictive policy frameworks. “Europe is not just a preview of what may come,” he warned. “In some cases, it is the test- ing ground.” Industry Affairs: What PPC Is Watching PPC’s own Tom Hendrickson, Manager of Industry Af- fairs, provided a structured view of the advocacy land- Mike Turner

PPC’s commitment to being the authoritative, collective voice for folding cartons, particularly at a time when leg- islation and regulation are increasingly shaping business planning. Women’s Leadership Council Luncheon The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) Luncheon, now in its second decade under the steady guidance of Dr. Ann Bowers-Evangelista, marked its largest gathering of women leaders to date.
DESIGNS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTION
Ann explored why even the most experi- enced leaders can lose clarity or confidence in high-stakes moments, whether advocating for a new idea, addressing conflict, or influ- encing a pivotal decision. “Our conviction isn’t about having the right words,” she re- minded the room. “It’s about having the pres- ence to deliver them.” Through interactive exercises, candid reflection, and real-world scenarios, partic- ipants examined the communication habits that diminish their impact and practiced tech- niques that elevate clarity, composure, and authority. Strategic Forces Reshaping Packaging In a high-energy, insight-rich presenta- tion, David Feber, Senior Partner of McKinsey & Company, brought a long-view perspec- tive on the industry’s most pressing stra- tegic forces. Feber’s analysis was ground- ed in data but deliv- ered with accessible clarity, showing members not only what is happening, but what to do next. He outlined emerging shifts in consum- er demand, the realities of cost pressure, and the accelerating role of sustainability and digitalization across value chains. He underscored the ongoing transformation of packaging from a cost center to a strategic growth driver and urged converters to build flexibility into their planning cycles. Feber’s takeaway was evident: those who prepare for long-term structural change will David Feber

Framing the conversation around a familiar challenge, Tiffany noted that even the most innovative ideas can stall when they meet entrenched habits or the dreaded “we’ve always done it this way” mindset. Managing up, she em- phasized, is both an art and a discipline, one that requires clarity, credibility, and an understanding of what motivates top-level decision-makers. Through interactive exercises and guided reflection, attendees explored how to reframe ideas in ways that resonate, present innovation through a leadership lens, and move projects forward even within traditional or risk- averse cultures. Tiffany’s emphasis on equal business stature and intentional communication offered a new perspective on advocating for change while maintaining strong relationships with senior leadership. Leadership Inspired Legal Insights In a session that blended legal insight with practical leadership, Chris Santomassimo, Attorney-at-Law, of OGC Solutions, challenged members to think differently about risk, not as something to fear, but as something to under- stand, evaluate, and use as a strategic advantage. He urged companies to establish structured processes, foster accountability, and avoid being paralyzed by uncer- tainty. In a year of transition across PPC member compa- nies, his presentation was both timely and grounded. Chris emphasized, “You can’t fix what you don’t under- stand. Risk isn’t the enemy; being unprepared is.” He urged companies to establish structured processes, foster accountability, and avoid being paralyzed by uncer- tainty. In a year of transition across PPC member compa- nies, his presentation was both timely and grounded. Member Spotlight: A Great Little Box Company Among the day’s most memorable moments was the Member Spotlight from Doree Quayle, Division President at Great Little Box Company. of whom would tour the company’s facility the next morn- ing, Quayle shared the story not of machines or buildings, but of people. She began by telling the origin of the company name, which was rooted in a decades-old Yellow Pages adver- tisement that the founders couldn’t afford to change in 1982. It was a charming reminder that great companies are often built first on grit, not grandeur. But the heart of her message was this: “Grow our people, grow our business, and care for our community.”

stitute of Technology (RIT) for “Protection, Prevention & Awareness for Pets,” a cohesive system that blended con- sumer education with structural ingenuity. California Poly- technic State University captured both second and third place with PAWSH and Teef Story, demonstrating Cal Po- ly’s continued dominance in paperboard innovation and its reputation for design excellence. Economic Outlook With Jeff Rosensweig Jeff Rosensweig, Director of the John Robson Program for Business, Public Policy, and Government at Emory Uni- versity, returned to the stage with his unmistakable blend of insight, wit, and global perspective, offering a clear- eyed look at the forces reshaping the economic horizon. His analysis painted a picture of an economy in transition: dynamic, uncertain, and defined by pressures that de- mand strategic foresight from business leaders. At the center of his presentation was the scale and speed of transformation. Artificial intelligence, he noted, is no longer an emerging disruptor; it’s a gravitational force. By comparing the market capitalization of AI-driven com- panies to the GDP of entire countries, Rosensweig under- scored how profoundly technology has reordered global value creation. The Woods Scholar Award The 2025 Woods Scholar Award, given to Chris Cox of Malnove carried special significance as PPC formally renamed the honor to recognize both J.
