so much emphasis upon this subject? Suggest some practical applications of the principle of humility which He laid down. 2. What do you make of Christ’s re ply to Peter (vs. 6, 7) ? What do you think of the explanation that this was a type of the cleansing work of Christ which the Holy Spirit was to accomplish? Note that Jesus uses two different words in this connection: “He that it bathed [used of washing the entire body] need- eth not save to wash [used of washing the hands or feet] his feet, but is clean every whit” (v. 10, R. V.). Discuss the suggestion that we have been cleansed once for all through the new birth, a process which needs not to be repeated. However, we do need the repeated daily purification from the defilement of the ever-present sin about us. 3. In verse IS, we find Jesus saying: “I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done.” This verse applies primarily to the example of hu mility. However, there is a major appli cation. State some of the things which Christ did which should serve as an ex ample to us. State some other things which He did in which we cannot follow Him. Which question is more fitting: What would Christ do? or, What would Christ have me to do? 4. Discuss the subject of lowly service. Suggest some forms of Christian work which are not sought after because of their menial or insignificant character. According to Christ’s standards, is the president of an organization any more important than the lowliest member? Are we Christian in our attitude when we praise some and neglect others? 5. Discuss Judas. Was he a believer in Christ? Why did Christ make him one of His disciples, when He knew from the beginning that he would betray Him? How do you account for the fact that the rest of the disciples seemed to have no suspicion of Judas? Is there not a warn ing here against setting ourselves up as judges of those about us? How do we know what they really are inside? Be cause there was a Judas among the twelve, have we reason to discard all the teachings of Jesus? 6. Discuss Christ’s badge of disciple- ship as found in verses 34 to 35. What is the measure of Christ’s love for us? Give some practical examples of how we can express our love one for the other. Is love really love if it is not expressed? Can the average Christian today be known by this badge? Are church wrang- lings of God? 7. Study the self-assurance of Peter. Is self -confidence a good trait? Was Pe ter’s statement that of a man with firm conviction in his heart, or that of a blus tering braggart who desired to make an impression? Or was it something between those two extremes? Suggest some of the dangers of the impetuous disposition. How can they be guarded against? The Inner Life In a day of much activity in evangelical and other work, there is great danger in the neglect of the cultivation of the in ner life. The service of the outer courts may easily be allowed to interfere with the soul’s devotions in the inner sanctu ary. Great care may be given to that which is presented to man, while little time is given to the condition of the soul
before God. Hours are spent in preach ing and in other manward services, while minutes suffice in the presence of, God. Such a state of things cannot last long. Spiritual vigor can be sustained only by the cultivation of the inner life, and this requires time for heart-searching, prayer, and meditation on the Word in the pres ence of God. —B eliever ' s M agazine . A Letter From J. H. Casto Come just for a few moments and have a g l i m p s e into a land where m y s t e r y and blessing are intermin gled. Being isolated (in Yungkang, Yun nan) from the rest of China is to our advantage rather than disadvantage, for we are as yet untroubled by the awful chaos that has swept over China these past few years. Let me now take you to one of our Lahu villages. This village, for reasons best left unmentioned in this letter, is one of the most backward. It was during the rainy season this summer that a strange thing happened which, in their ignorance, the people insisted was due to demon in fluence. An unusually hard thunderstorm had sent a new stream of water down the mountainside, and the little stream chanced to run through a heathen Chinese home. A Chinese Child, playing in the mud pool just outside the front door, dis covered a small earthenware bowl cotir taining three coins tied together, floating on the pool of water. The older people were called, but no one could explain from whence had come this bowl and the coins. They were thought to be such strange coins, and the bowl such as no man ever made. “Therefore,” they said, “they were certainly created and placed here by the demons, and some dire calam ity must be going to happen 1” I went in a few days to examine the things and found the bowl to be merely a carelessly made howl such as every one here uses, and the coins were nothing more than Chinese brass cash, the kind with a square hole in the center. The peo ple of that district, for the most part, use Indian currency and had never seen the brass cash; hence the mystery. I mention this merely to show how much the lives of these people are wrap ped up in superstition, and to urge you to pray that they may be entirely free in Christ Jesus. Not far from there is a village of some twenty or more Lahu families, called Small Village. During the rains, an epi demic of dysentery broke out, and every heathen family lost at least one member; but the one Christian family in that village suffered no loss, so far as I have heard. Praise God for the way He protects those who profess to be Hisl Though our special work now is among the Lahu tribe, we are also expected to do all we can for the Wa tribe, learning their language, and doing what we can to reduce it to writing. Thus far, only about six or eight individuals of that tribe have professed faith in Christ. In our district, there are five or six other tribes that as yet have not been evangelized. Pray that soon the gospel may be given to them, and that the Holy Spirit may do a great work of grace in the hearts of all the heathen, that ere long, there ,may be a great turning to the Lord Jesus Christ. — C h ina ' s M illions .
the Son of God. They have never heard the story of salvation. In the first chap ter of Romans, we are told that God will judge them according to their light. There are millions more who can not excuse themselves on the ground of lack of knowledge. Their condemnation is much greater, for in their case, it is not ignorance but willful disobedience. In the fourteenth chapter of Romans, Paul sug gests the rule for judging doubtful things, when he says: “Happy is he that con- demneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.” Jesus, stating the positive form, says: “I have given you an exam ple, that ye should do as I have done to you” ; and then He adds the conclusion: “Happy are ye if ye do them.” Why do we not put faith into practice and live up to that which we know we should do? D iscussion 1. Discuss the subject of pride and hu mility. Why do you think Christ placed Study Your Bible By Correspondence School, Bible Institute of Los Angeles, 536 So.
