CWU Trustee Retreat Agenda Thursday

CWU: S TUDENT & P ARENT S URVEY

9 pre-college test were included in the sample, and further, were willing to complete the survey. 92% came from a family where someone had gone to college; 90% saw themselves in college 2 years from now; 84% could name a field of study in which they were interested; 67% had a GPA over 3.5. Comparison of Student and Parent Samples The samples for the student and parent surveys were quite similar, which would be expected. Some slight differences: • Far more of the students represented in the parents survey (68%) had already applied to college than in the student survey (25%). This partially reflects the fact that there was a higher proportion of seniors represented in the parent sample. It also suggests a parent sample that is actively involved and encouraging of their children’s’ education. • Half of both samples were suburban. The parent sample tended to be slightly more based in large cities, while the student sample was slightly more small town. • Both samples were 68% Caucasian. Asians were the second largest ethnic group in both samples. The student sample was slightly more diverse, with more Latinos, African Americans and Native Americans than the parent survey. • The parent sample appears more well-to-do, but that seems to be mostly an artifact of the students’ not answering the family income question. Colleges of Interest Student respondents were asked which colleges they were “interested in maybe attending.” Those who had applied to a college (25%) were asked which was their first and second choice, and which others had they applied to. The University of Washington topped the list of schools students are interested in with 41% volunteering UW in answer to the open-ended question. Central ranked seventh with 11%. Among those who had already applied, however, Central topped the “First Choice” list with 19% naming CWU as their first choice, tying CWU with private out-of-state schools (as a group). Some 42% of those who has already applied have been accepted at Central – by far the most of any school. Among the parents, private out-of-state schools topped the lists of both “interest” and “first choice.” CWU was tied for 2 nd on the “first choice” list with the UW and private in- state schools (as a group). As with the student survey, CWU headed the list of schools to which student have already been accepted – with an almost identical 41%.
