Dear CWU Board of Trustees cc: President Gaudino, Provost Frank, CFO Klucking, Board Secretary Schactler

First, I want to reiterate my sincere thanks for your service on the CWU Board. It is an important role and your time/dedication is very important to the overall success of the Institution. We spent 10-15 hours per week as Board Directors at the Northshore District (Kenmore/Bothell/Woodinville), so I appreciate the commitment that it entails. Second, to provide some additional context for my comments to the Board on Friday (May 18), far below is an e-mail exchange started back in January with the other members of the newly formed BEC. As with any new process/structure there are learning curve issues - though I do think some items are sufficiently unresolved and the Board should seek additional information before you approve the operating budget for the 2018-19 academic year at the July 25-27 BOT meeting. Third, from a "proper channels" perspective, I want to be very clear that I'm supportive of dealing with issues at the lowest level possible and then continuing to elevate as needed. I've been through LOTS of budget/performance issues in my career in government/nonprofit accounting and finance. The concerns we have here at CWU are very important to be dealt with now, yet they are pretty standard for any organization in a challenging environment looking at new management tools/methods. Also, I want to reiterate I was one of just a very few faculty who opposed the ADCO letter that was sent last year. I strongly argued to my colleagues that those concerns should have been addressed first to the individuals concerned. For this year, I believe that both I and my colleagues have been very careful to slowly move through all of the procedural steps as designed. And, I am speaking/writing AS AN INDIVIDUAL and not speaking on behalf of any committee or organization within CWU. All errors are my own. BEC BACKGROUND I serve as one of the 12 members of the BEC (Budget Executive Committee) which is the highest level internal Committee and we are tasked with providing guidance and recommendations to the President.
