CWU Trustee Retreat Agenda Thursday

Central Washington University Board of Trustees July 27, 2018 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY – Board Organization r Board Assessment:

In spring 2017 the board conducted a self-assessment and the chair interviewed each trustee to develop strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the board. As a result, during the 2017-2018 academic year trustees reorganized their quarterly meetings to support more and better board discussion and debate, and to engage trustees directly in recognition events on campus. In June, the executive committee of the board administered a self-assessment for all trustees. Six trustees responded to the survey. The results will be discussed at the board retreat and the executive committee members will follow up the discussion with individual meetings with trustees. Some takeaways included a desire for: • more focused engagement of trustees in fundraising activities • consideration of strategies to enhance the board understanding of the experience of students and employees, and • engaging trustees in identifying candidates for board openings. r Elections: CWU Policy 1-60-070 states that the Board of Trustees shall elect the chair and vice chair annually at the board’s summer meeting. The chair and vice chair hold their positions for one year or until their successors are elected. r Committees: Central Washington University Policy 1-60-040 instills in the chair the authority annually to create committees and appoint membership in them. Membership on committees shall be for a one-year term and shall be by the appointment of the chair. Over the past decade the committees of the CWU Board of Trustees have been assigned to a variety of topics, for example, enrollment management, public affairs, finance, and operations. Washington’s public baccalaureates similarly use committees to do work in many areas. Currently, the board has five committees: Enrollment Management, Business and Financial Affairs, Operations, Academic and Student Life, Executive. r Meeting Schedule: State law [RCW 28B.35.110] requires boards of trustees of baccalaureate institutions to meet twice per year; Central Washington University Policy 1-10-030 states that the Board shall hold a regular meeting at least once each calendar quarter. Additionally, with 24-hours notice, board may schedule special meetings.
