CWU Trustee Retreat Agenda Thursday

CWU Trustee and Board Assessment – June 2018

4. How could you enhance your effectiveness as a board member? Do you have expertise, talents, and interests that have not been utilized by the board? Comments: Several trustees indicated a willingness to engage more frequently in university activities, but wanted to be contacted with specific opportunities, times, and locations. One trustee suggested a board discussion about strategies for fuller understanding of the student and employee experience, while maintaining the governing board’s advisory role as board articulated in board policy (CWUP 1-20). 5. Do the materials and briefings provided to trustees prepare you for the board and committee meetings and give you enough information to make informed decisions? Yes: 5 No: 1 Comments: Most board members appreciated the breadth and depth of materials provided to trustees and felt that the information flow also was transparent. One trustee requested a deeper diver on most issues and more in-depth discussion on strategy. Other suggestions included dashboards “that measures how well we are doing over time and agreed-upon metrics,” and earlier receipt of board materials and briefings. 6. How would you rate the performance of the board? ( 1-not effective to 5-extremely effective) 4.08 What could be done to improve its performance? • Fuller board engagement was a suggestion of several trustees. The reference included better attendance at and more effective engagement during board meetings, as well as participation in university events. • Leveraging board contacts in new-trustee searches. Trustees suggested more intentional engagement of trustees in the search for new board members when openings arise, with particular emphasis on individuals with experience on boards of large organizations and with experience fundraising. • Board discussion about the committee structure. The creation of committees and appointment of committee membership is within the purview of the board chair, a responsibility articulated by the board’s constitution (CWUP 1-60-040). The chair typically assigns committee duties to trustees during the July retreat, but may change committee structures as needed during the academic year.

7. Have you participated in CWU activities beyond board meetings to the extent that your time permitted? Yes 6 (all respondents)
