mighty rain is heard. There is no reason why we should not ask for large things; and without doubt we shall get large things if we ask in faith, and have the courage to wait with patient perseverance upon Him, meantime doing those things which lie within our power to do. We cannot create the wind or set it in mo tion, but we can set our sails to catch it when it comes; we cannot make the elec tricity, but we can stretch the wire upon which it is to run and do its work; we cannot, in a word, control the Spirit, but we can so place ourselves before the Lord, and so do the things He has bidden us do, that we will come under the influence and power o f His mighty breath. — Selected. —o— July 17— “Let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day o f my distress. . . . And he built there an altar . . . . because there God was re vealed unto him” (Gen. 35:3, 7). The memory of our Bethels is the most precious, blessed memory of our lives. God wants us to go back there and re joice in the memory of the wonderful way in which, when we were in distress, He revealed Himself unto us. It has been said that “the way of advance is the way of remembrance.” Think today o f the highest mountain peak of experience of God that you have ever known; then praise Him for it, rejoice that you may have it renewed today, and know that your normal, everyday life in Christ may now be better and higher than the best Bethel that your past has ever known. That is the power and will of our God. —Messages for the Morning Watch. July 18— “I f thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication” (Job 8:5). When you pray, are you more con scious of His presence than o f any other presence in the world? I am not talking about intercession, but about communion, the quiet hour with the Lord. If anything transpires to rob you of your early morn ing watch, do you feel all day as if you had missed a love touch, and a love greet ing, and a love thrill? I do.— Dr. Charles Inwood. Nothing between, Lord, nothing between; Let not earth’s din and noise Stifle Thy still, small voice; In it let me rejoice— Nothing between, nothing between. —o— July 19— “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow o f the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). We live in very jostling times. We are pushed and elbowed on every side. The crowd is always about us—the heedless, careless, competing multitude. The quiet ing genius of privacy has been almost banished. We are greatly rushed, and we greatly need the secret place. How prone we are to become hot and feverish; to lose the coolness of our judgment; to. grow hasty and irritable in temper, and to have our passions heated like an oven. For our crowded, hustling life we are offered the secret place; for our heated and overwrought spirits, we are offered the shadow o f the Almighty. We are to

tion; nay, that in the midst of all, he would indulge in a sacred joy in God and a cheerful expectation from Him. Heroic confidence! Illustrious faith! Uncon querable love!— Sermons by Dr. Dod dridge, Vol. I. —o— 'July 14— -"And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and, departed into a solitary place, and there prayed’’ (Mk. 1:35). If you and I would be like Jesus, we must especially contemplate Jesus praying alone in the wilderness. There is the se cret o f His wonderful power. What He did and spoke to man, was first spoken and lived through with the Father. In communion with Him the anointing of the Holy Spirit was each day renewed. He who would be like Him in his walk and conversation must simply begin here, that he follow Jesus into solitude. Even though it cost the sacrifice of night rest, of business, of intercourse with friends, the time must be found to be alone with the Father. Besides the ordinary hour of p r a y e r , he will at times feel ir resistibly d r a w n to e n t e r the holy place, and not come thence until it has been anew revealed to him that God‘ is his portion. In his secret chamber, with closed door, or in the solitude of the wil derness, God must be found every day, and our fellowship with Him renewed. Christlike praying in secret will be the secret o f Christlike living in public. —Andrew Murray. I met Him in the morning, When my day was at its best, And His presence came, like sunrise, Like a glory in my breast; All day long His presence lingered, All day long He stayed with me, And we sailed in perfect calmness O’er a very troubled sea. — o— July 15— "The God that answereth by fire, let him be God’’ (1 Ki. 18:24). That proposal was made in the perfect assurance that God would not fail him. Had he not spent days in prayer? Had not the divine plan been revealed to him? Was it to be supposed for a moment that God would push His servant into the front of the battle, and then leave him? Granted that a miracle must be wrought ere the sun set, there was no difficulty about that to a man who lived in “ the secret place of. the Most High.” Miracles are only the results o f the higher laws of His presence-chamber. God will never fail the man who trusts Him utterly. He may keep him waiting until the fourth watch of the morning; but the gray dawn will reveal Him stepping across the billows’ crests to His servant’s help. Be sure that you are on God’s plan; then go forward in God’s name.— Elijah, by Meyer. Jesus never fails, Jesus never fails, Heaven and earth shall pass away, But Jesus never fails! — o— July 16— “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine off spring” (Isa. 44:3). We must keep on praying and waiting upon the Lord, until the sound o f a

Pentecostal Blessing in Africa

The UNEVANGELIZED AFRICA MISSION workers in Belgian Congo had reason to praise God, as did the angels of old, when, on Christmas Day, twenty-five natives accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. A few days later, at another station in French Equatorial Africa a similar declaration was made by a lesser number. Fourteen missionaries, includ ing a doctor, are on the fields, with eighteen native helpers, all young converts. Four sta tions opened, nine outstations and approxi mately one hundred and fifty converts in less than two years. Over a million primitive na tives accessible. Thirteen candidates, includ ing two doctors, are ready to be sent out. If you would like to become a prayer helper send for a card. You will NOT be solicited for money.
